Whats THE song, that makes you think of the Vietnam War?

Of course there was the:
"I feel like I'm fixing to die rag" by Country Joe and the Fish.
Heard this at a Country Joe concert in a very small venue the night before my second draft physical.

Then:
"8 Miles High" by the Byrds.
Every time I hear it I picture a medvac chopper lifting off from a hot zone. Can't explain why, I was 21 in '67 and like many others from that period fully participated in the culture.

I was talking to my wife about this just yesterday listening some good ol' 60's-70's music. Just listening to the songs you get taken back to good memories. Yes they were bad times, but still, the people that lived through those era's were great. I just don't see any of that with today's music. Music today tells stories of MONEY, FAME, SEX, and just stupid JUNK in general. Back then, the music told stories of struggle, War,Love, Life, etc.

The shards of glass, plastic and metal that is working itself out to the surface of my cheeks and face.
These shards were healed over many years ago, and have been coming to the surface for many years.
Just felt another, and it came out with a fingernail assistance.
Just crud my Doctor says. Quite normal.

Of course, as some have said, One Tin Soldier...

Jinx Dawson of Coven recorded this for the soundtrack of "Billy Jack"...I was 16, the war was still on, and draft registration was imminent for me at 18...but my number wasn't up, and the war finally wound down...but the lyrics were haunting and remain relevant, even, today...

"Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend, do it in the name of Heaven, you can justify it in the end, there won't be any trumpets blowing, come the judgment day, on the bloody morning after...One Tin Soldier rides away."

Originally recorded by Canadian group, The Original Caste.

I notice in that top 40 list that it's a total mix Rock and Roll, R&B, Soul, Sinatra and Country. We were actually free to like any and all music....didn't have to choose up sides and hate some music. I remember in '66 at the EM club one of the juke box favorites was Buck Owens ( I Got the Hungrys for your Love and I'm Waitin' in your Welfare Line)...no kidding!

Every time I hear CCR "Fortunate Son" it reminds me of what a cowardly slug Al Gore was back then.

The only possible way to make that song any worse is to have the burn out Bob Dylan try to sing it!!!!!!
He might have wrote a lot of great songs but the dude couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

Same with the dude from Canned Heat - Going up the Country is painful to listen to

Fortunate Son
Purple Haze
Experience
White Room
Satisfaction
Seasons in the Sun
The End
For what it's worth
White Rabbit
Leaving on a jet plane
Many others...

I include a picture I took of the statue no body seems show

I was born in 67, so a wee bit to young to serve. Anyway, by the end, I was old enough to remember a few things like---the music.

I've been wanting to ask this for a long time and was wondering what is THE song, that reminds you of Nam?

For me its many like:

Chapel of Love, Wooly Bully, These Boots Are Made For Walking, Paint It Black, Smoke On the Water etc.

I don't know if it's been mentioned before by: Puff the Magic Dragon by Peter Paul and Mary. I recall that song was laying when my Cousin Bobby-was leaving for Nam in 70.

And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for?

Don't ask me I don't give a damn
Next stop is Vietnam.
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopie! We're all gonna die!

Don't get much more Nam than that

followed by the live version of Alice's Restaurant - Arlo Guthrie; Volunteers - Jefferson Airplane; Star Spangled Banner - Hendrix live at Woodstock
