What’s up with the cost of 28’s lately

The 27's bargain brother is still an adjustable sighted N-Frame 357 with a less flashy finish and they shoot just as well.

I've had my 28-2 since about 1980. No box or goodies, Pachmayer rubber grips, and Mag-na-ported; but it cost me only $189.00 OTD. It shoots a 180 grain 357 rifle developed load, about the same as 146 WC target ammo in a model 10! It is/was my first S&W revolver, and to be honest, it will most likely be the last to be removed before they ignite my burial pyre!

Ya, I have one of each. Was curious and started looking for a 6” to go with my 4” 28. You know, gotta get one of each. Then I can move onto another model and fixate on that. It’s bad friends! It’s almost like you can’t ask for help cuz the Doc will lock ya up. Lol!!

The days of picking up used Model 28's for $400 are in the rear view mirror. There is a finite number of Model 28's available and a growing demand for them. This means prices on Model 28's, although they will always be less than comparable Model 27's, has risen and will continue to rise.

Way cooler name too!

Here’s my S263xxx 28-2 that shipped in May 1963. I picked it up about a year and a half ago for $750. I had another 28-2, N-prefix from the ‘70s that was in a little worse shape and I sold it at the Lakeland show a year ago for $700. I think I paid $600 for that one back in 2020.

1. Production ended in 1986
2. People discovered them, limited supply, bid prices up.
3. Paid $140 for my 6" in 1981, Magna grips, not box or papers, near mint.
4. Bought it because i couldn't find a 4" and seen few since.

As the number of people who want a Model 28 grows larger and larger every day, the number of Model 28s out there is finite. With more people looking to buy a Model 28, sellers can ask whatever they want, and a lot of buyers are willing to pay to get one. The prices will never go down, only going up from here on out.

Cycles of buyer trends. I recall around 6-7 years ago, that there was an M 28 craze that drove up prices. Then it cooled,,

Great revolver! I will not sell mine!

My first S&W revolver was a 6" S prefix 28-2 bought way back in the fall of 1966. I still have it. Wanted a 4" but couldn't find one. Now all these years later I have added three 4" 28-2s, one an S prefix from 1967 I think, to the 6" and have to fight the urge to add another one.
