To the sub-plot for a moment:

Whether the person dies or not is not the issue. It is whether they stop their action right now. At least that is the reason I have a defensive handgun.

Can't argue with that, but; 2 years from the incident, and your sitting in civil court because it was dark and you put a couple rounds through the perps spine or hips and didn't kill them...., and now the plaintiff has been permanently crippled for life cause you are "some gun crazy nut who loads his own ammo..." And all the plaintiff was trying to do was steal some food to feed his family....Or wrongful death suits....

Being justified or not will only keep you out of jail

I have read "In the Gravest Extreme." It is a VERY good book. However, the best advice I can give if involved in a self-defense shooting is to get a GOOD lawyer. Anything can happen and anything could (not saying it will) be used against you.

prosecuting attorney:
"So you chose ammunition specifically designed for law enforcement and carried by your local authorities?
Is that because you think that you are a cop or because you wanted to be a vigilante?"

One thing people always forget when discussing legal issues is that each locality is different!
What may get you in trouble in NYC where shooting an airgun is illegal will not necessarily in MT.
