What's your favorite brush beater rifle?

Ole Sparky

My custom built .54 Hawken flintlock is my favorite "close up" rifle. When it comes to one of those fancy, rear loading brass flingers, I like my 1895 Marlin in .45/70 or the .45 Henry Big Boy...Of, course a big, sharp bowie can bust something in the brush too if you don't mind smellin their breath.

A 1942 M1 Garand with a scout mount and red dot sight.

Perfect balance, enouth power for anything, and very quick sighting with the red dot.

Not worried about dings, its been through 3 wars, nothing I can do will ever come close to that.
m1gunner, Can you post a picture and a how-to/how-much? I am intrigued!

Glenfield 30 from 1967 in 35 Rem with a Lyman 66.

I've seemed to accumulate several 'in-close' numbers over the years:

H&R Handi-Rifle in .500 S&W
Win. Trapper in .45 Colt
Ruger Deerslayer Carbine .44 Mag.
Marlin 336 'Texan' carbine from early '70's in .30-30

Marlin 1895 XLR in .45/70 that I cut the barrel to 20". It is easy to carry and swings nice in a treestand; my main "Hog Thumper".

All of them are true-to-form. I want to thank all of you for helping me add to my want list!

My trusty FR-8 carbine in 7.62 NATO would make a dandy brush gun. Now who here know's what a FR-8 is?

i love my FR-8 !

got it cheap a few years ago before they became too popular. with open sights its plenty accurate to 100 yards

Where I live you have to use shotguns. Many moons ago I bought a 3" A-5 Browing that had been in a fire for $50. New springs and a Ram-Line plastic brought the price to under $150. Ugliest thing you ever saw but I use it to push back bull briars and it still shoots.

My hands down favorite brush beater is my Spanish FR8. The worlds first and only "bolt action assault rifle". :D

For size comparison, the barrel is 18.5 inches long with the flash hider. It shoots any 308 you want to feed it so ammo is not a problem. And if whatever it is gets too close, I can stab it with the bayonet.

Mine is the one next to the bottom. It is an old Mexican Mauser in 7x57. It wears a 3x weaver scope. I've got a bit of work in sporterizing it, but even loaded with ammo, I have less than $50 in it. It is my brush/bad weather/truck rifle, and has accounted for several whitetails.

Frankly all my guns are meant to be used and not sit in a safe and look pretty,I actually hate guns like that.

That said over the past few months it's been this "little" bugger more and more...

Browning A-Bolt .375 H&H,it had a BOSS break on it and whatever else it's supposed to do,me being the nut I am got it chopped off! it's now an 18 1/2 inch carbine :D

When I tell people what it is they generally have this reaction

Krull,
I like your style....!
Don't worry about chopping off the barrel, in your case you had an excuse - something broke and you made it better.
These two .375 H&H Winchesters started off pretty much stock, but with my desire to turn them into more useful Scout type field guns, they ended up just where I needed them....

If you can't get it done with a .375 H&H, it's probably not worth doing.. :)

This 760 remington was my dads. He shot his last big buck with it at about 87 years old. I have a bunch of more exspensive and classic rifles, but after trying this one out I was surprised of the accuracy and handeling. I will be hauling this one a lot on my ATV this year.
