What's your "Go To" HD firearm?

With young grandchildren often at the house, there is no way that I could leave a rifle or shotgun loaded and ready, and I know that if I had one handy, and planned to lock it up whenever children were around, sooner or later I would forget to do so. So my "go to" gun is a handgun, kept in a GunVault in my dresser right next to my bed. Not instantly available, but reasonably so with just a finger pad code to enter to get to my loaded Model 19 with laser sights. Those who think that with proper education regarding firearms they can safely leave loaded weapons accessible to young children are just playing Russian roulette with those children's lives.

I have over 50% of the handguns mentioned in this thread available to me for home defense but I don't use any of them for my main "go to HD firearm." I have/use my S&W Governor with Crimson Trace plus my alert system (dog and alarm).

75 and 68 pound dogs beside bed, Model 640 with crimson trace and model 10 on my side of the bed, 649 on the wife's side of the bed. Son has 18 inch 12 gauge pump.

1. Mossberg 500 20 Ga with the plug removed, loaded with five #1 buck. When you hear it rack it's too late to rethink your choices.
2. Shield 40 under my pillow.
3. XD 40 Service in my bedside table.
4. XD40sc in my wife's bedside table.
5. A 20-lb orange tabby who thinks he's a lion--and damn near is.

Where do you live...Detroit? (I know, Texas)
Gun under the pillow? Seriously, when you have one on the nightstand?

My dog. After she finished ripping the larynx out of the burglar, I seriously doubt I would need the model 36 with 110gr. Hydra Shoks. I do have both at my disposal, though. ;)

Probably been done before, but I'll ask again anyway.

No time to open the safe and break out the SAW (or AT-4), no time to find the one (maybe) buried in the couch, no time for anything but the one you keep out just in case.

For me, it's a Glock 22 with night sights and a SureFire light.
Not fancy, not really my best choice for those unannounced guest, but it'll work till I can fight my way to a rifle.

I don't keep one "out" for safety reasons with the kids etc., but I always have one (whatever I'm carrying) on my person until bed time. Either holstered or in my pocket until bed time. At bed time, out of the safe comes the FNP-45 tactical, with mounted light and holographic sites and I stick it to a gun magnet mounted to my bed frame. Wake up in the morning and the FNP goes back in the safe and my carry gun for that day comes back out.

I also have dogs and a security alarm system.

This is a true story.I met a guy at my LGS.We were at the gunsmith counter and he had a 6-61/2 629 that was covered in rust(I mean caked on).I asked what happened and this was his reply"I leave this in the toilet bowel tank.I know somebody is going to break in when I am on the toilet and I want to have a gun".All I could do was stare a moment and say best of luck.

I don't know if that one makes me want to laugh, cry, or just shake my head. So I guess I'll laugh. :D

Just whatever is handy. The gun is just a tool, whichever tool I happen to have I will use to the best of my ability. If that is a Glock 17 it's a G17, if it is a S&W snub then it's a S&W snub, if it's a S&W 65 then that's what it is, and so on. If a shotgun is handy then it's a shotgun.

Either my Glock 30 with a G21 mag or my 6906, depending on which end of the house I'm in at the time.

The only accessible one upstairs is a G17 with golden sabers. A much, much wider selection locked away in the basement.

Reports show that in many home invasions the BGs confine the residents in a bathroom. It's small, easy to watch and control, and nobody keeps a gun in their bathroom, right?

So a friend of mine has a holster glued to the underside of the tank in both his bathrooms, with a 9 mm gun in each one. He says it's like insurance--he probably won't ever need it, but if he does there's nothing else that will suffice.

With a few brief exceptions I've slept with a gun under my pillow since I was 12 years old. That's 59 years, and in all that time I've never had an AD, shot myself or my significant other. I'm happy to say I've never had to shoot a Bad Guy, either, but there's always that possibility.

And BTW - my father slept with a loaded gun under his pillow from the time he was a boy until he died at age 86. He never shot anyone, either.

Some folks do, some folks don't. It's a matter of personal preference.

But you said you ALSO have a gun on the nightstand beside the bed!!! I mean, I believe in being cautious/prepared...but that's ridiculous...in my opinion. Or, as Coach Yoast said to Coach Boone - "There's a fine line between tough and crazy and you're flirting with it"

"I don't agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

That quote has been attributed to many famous personages, but whoever said it, it applies here.

My 11 year old chow-shepherd mix...who sleeps through anything.

My two rabid cats.....who will hide under the bed.

Then, my Governor! Loaded with PDX1 and Critical Defense 45 ACP.

My M&P9c and SD9VE with a streamline with strobe, and my 15-22 with a 25rd and 10rd mag loaded ready to go. I handed over my Mossberg 500 to my buddy who lives in the apartment below mine, if he sends off a shot, I'll be right there behind him, with a "rabid" pit-mix runt ready to go as well. Living in Detroit makes you prepared for anything.
