What’s your hat worth?

I have a couple of caps I bought so long ago I can't remember what they cost. Most of what I have now are baseball caps I got from companies I used to work for.

I do have a Remington ball cap I got for buying a couple of boxes of 12 gauge slugs. Does that count?

The two I got when my dad died, there isn't enough money to buy those.
They are 35/40 years old, one is for work and one for dress. The work
hat could use a cleaning but in my mind I would lose some of the
connection to my dad. I am sure this all sounds dumb to some of you
but that is how I feel.

Don't wear hats and if I did it certainly wouldn't be some silly cowboy hat!!!

Henschel Aussie breezer, less than $50. XXL for summer

Filson packer XXL $60.00 fall

Duluth trading firehose driving cap XXL $20.00 Spring

I have many hats and caps. There is one Stetson Ten-X Straw hat that I wrote about three or so years back when my mother passed away. It was bought at Ben's in Cotulla, Texas. Sadly, Ben's is no more. I have other hats that have shielded me from the elements, but that hat is spiritual to me . You may joke about my thinning gray/white hair, but there are reasons why I wear the hat I wear. It's mostly about protecting my head from the elements, but some of the head-wear has special meanings. Do not mess with my hat.

Dinkum Aussie Akubra. The shipping alone was more than any of my other hats.

I have hard hats in every color, and a couple dozen ball caps, but after some quality time at the dermatologist's getting a few items frozen and the rest of my head medically scorched, twice, I've had to start wearing full-brim hats. So far it's a Henschel with lots of ventilation and Filson Packers for winter and summer. If they keep me from any further trouble, they're priceless.

I have a couple of hats about like what Lord Roxton and Marguerite wore in, The Lost World. One has a silver Atlantic salmon pin on it. The fish is very lifelike, a product of a fellow named George Harris, whom I profiled in a magazine article. I think he may be out of business now, but he did work on par with Sid Bell's. Bell, The Alaska Silversmith, died in 2002.

My other hats are baseball style. Some are the vets' sort that cause younger people to thank me for my service.

My favorites are from Zeiss optical and John Rigby, the London gun maker. And I have one on the way from James Purdey & Son. It's a gift, but I think Purdey charges US $25, plus shipping.

I can't recall what I paid for the Aussie style safari hats. One is by Remington. It's khaki tan. I think the brown felt one is from Resistol.

The stars of the show mentioned wore real Akubra brand hats, but they're Aussies and were filming there, in Queensland.

I like those double terai hats like Stewart Granger wore in, King Solomon's Mines, or by white hunters in films like, Safari. Some have what seem to be double brims. Called double terai hats. Why two brims? Is there an inner shell hat under the external hat, for coolness or ruggedness?

Here in southern Colorado we enjoy about 330 days of sunshine per year and about 13" of annual precipitation. Winter temps average 62F days, 30F nights. Summer temps about 90F days, 60F nights. Typical humidity runs about 30%. Short version: semi-arid environment, near desert conditions most of the time. Unless I am out in the sun for work or recreation I seldom need a hat at all. But I am a fair-skinned blonde-haired white bread sort of guy, and I have experienced skin cancer (ears, face, scalp) so I have learned to protect myself when necessary.

Summer camping and fishing trips, 35 year old Resistol straw hat. I could probably replace it for $60 or so.

Winter snows, cold rainy days, Stetson 6X Open Road. MSRP is about $270 but few retailers stock the 6X beaver Stetsons so it would probably take me a long time to find another one, and mine has been custom-blocked so there would be another expense for replacement.

I still have a few of my Lobo Gun Leather caps that come in handy from time to time. I sold them on the website for $12, or $6 with any order over $50, and put a free one in every order over $100 during my last couple of years running the business. I had them made up by the gross (12 dozen per case) in tan, OD green, brown, and desert camo (very stylish fashion accessories!).
