What's your outdoor range like? Pics

Only two outdoor shooting ranges in my neck of the woods. I usually go to the C.W. Caywood Range in Arbor Vitae, WI on state forest land. The range is named after a fallen Vietnam veteran and is owned by the state but maintained by the local American Legion Post of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

It has six rifle stations, two for pistol, one shotgun and a small archery area. There has been talk of expanding it but nothing in the works yet.

Basic safety rules posted and paper targets only are allowed. Usually not too crowded except just before the regular gun deer season, which is now over. Most of the regulars are good folk and rules are well respected except for a zombie now and then or an irascible brass catcher. You meet some interesting people. One day I struck up a conversation with a guy in the rifle bay who had a Ruger AR-15, a couple of Glocks and two shotguns with him. "I've got more in my truck." Turns out he was wannabe military but couldn't get in so was making up for it by playing Rambo. Between he and his wife he claimed to have 50 guns. Nice guy if a bit overcooked. Let me shoot his AR-15, which was a blast.

It has areas for Cowboy Action shooting. Class III full auto shooting. Rimfire shooting. Handgun shooting. Areas where you can move and draw/shoot from concealment. There are golf carts to service the long range targets. They sell Tannerite for explosive fun. The club house always has something on the grill and folks just join in for the chow. Excellent shooters who are willing to lend their tools and knowledge to others. One of the finest places I have ever shot.

I've been by that place 100s of times and keep meaning to stop by and see what they've got. I live about 55 miles due east of there. Guess I need to check it out.

I've just returned from the Fort Bliss Rod & Gun Club. It has the best facilities I've ever seen on a military installation rod and gun club. There are nine ranges for everything from pistol, skeet, trap to rifle; one rifle range is set up for the NMC and one goes out to 1000 yds. The vegetation on the ranges is rather sparse, though. Anyone can join, you don't have to be military affiliated. Yearly membership for retirees like me is $70. One day shooting, all day, $12, and with lunch at the club you could make a really long day out of it. I shoot here a lot, although I stay away from it on weekends; however I've never achieved my goal of shooting on all five workdays some week.

Let's take a ride to the Pits.

Pits for raising and lowering each of the eight targets. Heavy steel with counterweights to help hoist them up and down. The target holders are pretty good sized, I think they are 6 X 6. Concrete wall provides comfort to those working the Pits during matches.





Target numbers are above and well behind the targets on the other side of the Pits.



Now let's ride over to the Plinking Range.

This is where pretty much anything goes from machine guns to 50BMG or suppressed .22s... whatever you got... bring it to the Plinking range. Steel plate and any garbage you want to bring to shoot at....

Let's ride over to the Competition Range. On the way we'll stop and get a soda at the facilities.



Competition range. Twenty cement shooting stations and about a half dozen wooden shooting stations and probably 50 feet more area for prone shooting. At 50yd and 100yd there are cement blocks in the ground with 1in holes on 12in centers for target stand legs, but you can bring stand alone targets and put them at any distance.





Behind the Competition range is an area for practical pistol and submachine gun competitions. We don't drive down the road unless the Competition Range is closed.

Reviving an old thread...

Ben Avery Shooting Facility, North Phoenix.

1650 acres. Several ranges including general, police, skeet, trap, cowboy, smallbore, extreme long range etc. Campground on site. Range fee is $7 per day for as long as you want to shoot, 7am to dusk. I'm usually there for about 4 hours.


Main range for just about everything, pistol, rifle, shotgun. No 50 BMG, tracers or armor piercing allowed but essentially anything else is fine. Five to 200 yard target holders. 67 shooting benches. I can't get a photo of all the benches in one shot. This pic is looking fron one end toward the control booth which is dead center in the row of benches. On the left of the pic, people are attaching targets and so forth. Tape dispensers and target holders are available and free for anyone to use. On the right of the pic is the shooting bench area. Hanging, suspended screens between each bench. Each station isnice and wide. Fits right or left handed shooters well and you're allowed to draw from a holster if you wish. There are portable screens to block flying brass from bottom feeder shooters. One is visible in the pic by the guy with the blue shirt, bent over working with his gun.

Pic from just about the same area. The place is so huge that you can't even see to the control booth from the ends of the line. Range officers with orange vests roam the lines and are visible in the pics. They're all knowledgable and friendly and VERY patient with new shooters who haven't yet gotten the "Don't cross the line during a range break" rule. Acoustic ceiling tiles with several inches of insulation behind that reduce the bang bang noise. You may collect your own brass or broom/squeege your brass into the area in front of the benches, out of the way of the shooters feet. The range collects that brass and sells/reloads it.

Dad with maybe 8 or 10 year old son. They're not shooting at the target you see in the pic, they're shooting at 100 yds. I think the SA revolver is 44 mag. Never could get a shot of the kid shooting but dad was calling for him through the spotter scope. At 100 yds, he was shooting the 7 ring consistantly. Note the tremendous natural backstop.

This is one of my students. The only time he's ever shot any kind of gun was a year ago when he fired someone's AR in the desert, and 40 years ago as a kid he fired a few rounds from some kind of goose gun. He shot fabulously. Clear and uncluttered mind without predisposed ideas about how to shoot allowed him to kill the black part of the targets time after time.

I think this was 25 yds. He's filling the black circular target. Gun is a model 66 shooting magnums.

He did equally well with my Chief's Special at every target distance out to 100 yds. I'm trying to capture a pic of the gun in mid-fire but it never happened. Hammer is on the way back in dbl action mode. Another good view of the great natural backstops here in the desert. On the other side of the huge mountain of desert rock, the closest inhabited area is several miles away and that's a prison. To break out of jail you either have to face the desert wilderness or walk into the target area of the range..

I'm there at least a couple times a week during the part of the year when the temps are below 100. I'm the guy with the smokey bear hat and huge gray moustache. Come and say hi.
