Hey, Larry,
I've about settled on the M-58. It'll do pretty well, I think! I'm not going to give the 58 away! I just gave a Mod.10 to another grandson who's not into shooting as much as the other one. This one's just graduated Tulane with a Master's in Finance but is having a hard time finding an appropriate job for his degree. He stayed in New Orleans and has been going to the range with a friend and using his guns. I offered him a choice between a 39-2 and the M-10. I think he made the right choice!

My 58 has some Herrett's Shooting Stars on it. I have some Arends on another gun. I like them both!

I stick to 38/357 guns in general. But, if I had the bear problem that 505 seems to have, I would jump to the 41 Magnum. Plenty of power to deal with anything short of the 50th Parallel. Would probably do well in a rifle, too (my favorite rifle is the Marlin 1894 in 357 Magnum).
I wonder if Smith could make a 41 Magnum on the L-frame? Five shot? Well, that would be OK.

Dick, it looks as though you may have a finger problem. I am assuming you are shooting single action. This could come from not having enough of your trigger finger on the trigger causing the tip of your finger to pull the gun to the left. Or it could be from tightening your fingers as you pull the trigger. I tell shooters that their grip should be "white knuckle tight" to maintain a consistent grip. Your groupings are OK.

That target was shot off sandbags. Look at the other target further on. It was shot the same way, only holding off about two inches to the left. This gun doesn't have adjustable sights. It's off that much.

I have five, too! An 8&3/8" 57, two 6" 57s, this 58 and a 4" 657! Excellent cartridge if you reload!

Hey, Boys!
A nice afternoon, today! 82° in the shade on the home range! Tested several loads through the 4" Mod 58 with good results. 4.5 gr. of Bulls Eye behind a commercial cast 215 gr. semi-wad for an average velocity of 763 FPS. And then, 7.5 gr. Universal Clays behind my home cast RCBS 220 gr. semi-wad for an average velocity of 1,071 FPS. Both were fairly accurate at 25 yards, but the UV was by far the best! A little harder to handle but much more accurate than the BE load! I guess I better try both loads in my 4" 657, now! I'll report on those when I get them done. Happy shooting, All!

I have another nominee for a woods gun. Several months ago I bought an HD from another member. It had had the cylinder replaced because of a damaged extractor, and there wasn't a replacement extractor available for that cylinder. The new cylinder (I have no idea what model the cylinder was intended for originally) and extractor work perfectly and it shoots great! The new cylinder isn't numbered so the gun can't be considered valuable. It even looks pretty good since I replaced the stocks with an old set of targets. It's a 5", but I have an old flap holster that fits it, so if I want to carry a .38 instead of one of the heavier calibers, now I can! I really like the old gun and it's another I can carry without worrying about destroying the value.

.357 (recessed chambers) or .38 cylinder? If its a .38 it had to be from an H-D or an Outdoorsman. Not a bad looking old gun. Shoot to point of aim for you?
