WHERE are the PRIMERS ?

Starting to see powder becoming available on some of the websites. Bought some HP-38 last week and received immediate delivery.

So now the last scarce component for reloaders are PRIMERS.
One comment on this forum last week was that we would not see primers until there was large surplus of ammo on LGS shelves.
does anyone have an update on Primer availability ?

After all, we who reload are in direct completion with them: however, our individual "markets" typically only consist of ourselves...:eek:

WHERE? All over, its like hunting Easter eggs, primers are where you find them. Fortunately, I do not have to do that.

I have read on Powder Valley's site that Powder is likely to be in short supply going forward and has already begun.

So, all of the COULD get worse.

I have not seen primers in over a year locally. A person can find them on the web at prices that will take your breath away.
For some reason it seems to be the only thing that is unavailable around here. My shooting just for fun will have to slow down soon, until they start to show up.
I have a lot of 22lr to keep me busy, so that’s a good thing.

I stay on the hunt for them, on the phone and stop in, one never knows. I find them once in a while, the most I have paid is $56.00 that was Saturday. Now I am in good shape and will wait until I can find them for under $45 before I buy any more.
CCI will most likely be what you will find.

The mfr's are most likely using all the primers they can make for their ammunition. I read somewhere some were using foreign made primers to ease the stress and maybe make some available for sale.

Nevada Ed... you are correctamundo.... I will stop shooting (my ONLY hobby that I have left in old age) before I pay the price that the distributors are forcing upon us with these FAKE shortages in components and ammo. THE ONLY WAY TO BEAT THEM is to NOT BUY.... vote with your feet folks... just say "NO" ...

Just yesterday, I received an email notification from TargetSportsUSA.com that they were generously offering me 500 rnd bricks of Thunderbolt (22lr) for $69.99 each brick. They must think that there is more than one STUPID person in the US.... but it isn't ME.

I cant agree more, a gun is useless w/o ammo. I will start shooting my bows more. .Have you seen the new cross bows lately. Good thing you cant hurt anybody with those

Do you carry that crossbow IWB when you are carrying it for self defense? I know they are very small.

I was talking to a salesman at an outfit way down south today. There are Winchester LP primers available here and not much else. They have 760,000 primers on consignment right now but it could be another two months before they arrive in country. It doesn't help that there is still a long turn around time for ships at our ports which, with our being far away from anywhere, makes it unprofitable for ships to call here.

Russian primers were the rage here a few years ago, but the U.S. sanctions saw them arrive somewhere in Scandinavia and stay there, they could not be loaded onto a ship heading down this end of the world.

I forced myself to order some srp on gun broker about 3 times the pre covid price but the shipping was about three quarters the cost of the item , from California and took over a week i could probably walked to calif and pick them up.
This is one reason for the exorbitant prices but if you need them what else can you do ? i have many pounds of powder different types and brands i could make a lot selling but im keeping them

LGS got in some CCI 209 shotshell primers but only two trays to a customer. The only other primers they had were large rifle magnums.

Relevant question: At how many guns and how much ammo does a man become dangerous?

I did a little googling, estimates are that there are about 4.5 million guns in the military, and about 434 million owned by the public. So, 100x owned by the public.

In 2018 alone, 8.7 billion rounds were produced for the US market.

Do you think we might run out?

That's less than what I ended up paying at the gun show down here last weekend. I went to every table in the show that was selling ammo. The only primers I found were at a table that was only selling otherwise already loaded brand stuff, and these were sort of tucked in between some other stuff, not really standing out. One carton of 1000 #350 CCI large magnum pistol primers, and one carton of 1000 Remington #2-1/2 lg. pistol primers. Paid $120 each for them, because I was entirely out of lg. pistol primers (I load 10mm and .41 Magnum and .45 Auto). First lg. pistol primers I've seen in a year, wasn't going to pass it up no matter how bad it hurt.

Week before, I got lucky and found 250 new primed .38 Spl cases, and a carton of 1000 Remington #5-1/2 primers at a sort of estate sale. Gotta get what you can, wherever you can find it.

All primer production is secretly delivered to a cave under a mountain in a secret location, but some leaks have reported some are being held in an abandoned salt mine. I feel fortunate in that I haven't had to alter my twice-weekly shooting sessions at a private gun club. As a suggestion, when primers become available again, even if they cost more, buy in cartons of 5,000 rather than in smaller increments. You'll save a little doing it this way and you won't have to buy so often. This isn't "hoarding" or "stockpiling" if you enjoy shooting on a regular basis.

As long as you don't store them on the back porch or under a shade tree in the yard, primers will stay good for at least fifty years. A closet shelf is fine, no ritualistic storage procedures required.

Primers have been scare for the last year. Most primers are going into loaded ammo. The local Scheels and Sportsmans Warehouse get some occasionally. You basically have to know when the truck is going to be showing up but they have started to get receive some.

When they start becoming easy to find is dependent on how long people keep panic buying all things ammo related.

I got some small pistol primers from a small gun shop a friend visits. 1000/$75. Last week I got Large pistol magnum primers for the same price then another friend gives me 500 of them. I won't use much of the magnum primers but maybe I can trade them for regular large pistol ones sometime. LPP are scarce here.
