I need to find a quality railroad engineer hat.
The internet has failed me miserably in my search for one.:mad::confused:

All I can find are children's versions  or some cheap junk one with elastic in the back.

I need to find a good one- preferably American made...
It also has to be hickory stripe, and with a wide sweat band (about 1 1/2 or so inches thick) and poof out a bit at the top so it's flat. If it is in any way like a modern cap- it's not correct. One that I'd have to order in hat sizes would be perfect.

I can't find the one I've had for decades. :( I believe it was a Sanford hat...
What ever shall I do!?!?!

If nothing else you will get me to send you one. But all of mine come from Tractor Supply:)

Here's a pic of me wearing one while I deliver a sermon to the faithful, plus one backslider:p

Drat, checked Tractor Supply's website and couldn't find them.

PM sent that will hopefully lead to an answer. Can't post here though because it involves a link to one of those auction sites.

Hang around the railyard, and mug an engineer.

A feller sent me a link to Roundhouse clothing and overalls made in Oklahoma, and they make a US made engineer hat. I think I'm going to try it.

If it doesn't work, it's back to the drawing board.

Lee, the train runs through here kinda infrequently since the tracks stop in Blue Ridge, and the last logging railroad was here in 1915.

I'll check with my friend Thomas...he'l know where to get one. If not, I'll check with Percy, James and Gordon. If none of them can help, Emily will know where to get one.

Or wait for one to come home. My Dad was a railroad engineer for 35yrs on a small line that served a large steel plant. There was a clothing store that carried all manner of industrial clothing , where most of the railroaders and steel plant workers would buy their coveralls , bandannas and the classic railroaders hats. But he never wore the blue pinstriped hat , he wore all manner of patterned , fruits , flowered , and his favorite , POLKA dots. He'd buy a box of a dozen at a time and wear 1 a day , and toss it in the laundry. It got HOT in that locomotive in the summer.

The steel plant's gone , but the stores still there. They were always known for carrying high quality American made work , hunting and outdoor clothing. Ya might email them and ask if they can get hats. Flocco's Discount Shoes and Clothes: Featuring Bass, Clarks, Rockport and Carhart

I'd bet all ya can find today are Chinese made.

Another possible source might be some of the model train suppliers. Back in my miss spent youth (my thirties) I was into model trains pretty heavy and seems like there were sources for engineer caps all over the model train magazines. As previously mentioned, Roundhouse in Shawnee, OK makes them. I live about 45 minutes from Shawnee and could check with Roundhouse over there if you'd like.

Schrader’s Railroad Catalog; railroadcatalog(dot)com has both traditional hickory striped engineer’s flat top caps and Kromer’s railroad caps in sizes from 6-7/8 to 7-7/8.
I confess to a liking for the red and white polka dot kromer, my wife violently disagrees.
A great catalog if you like railroads, especially steam.
I have ordered from them and been happy with their products.
