I know there have been several threads on the shortages. But,

Yesterday we were BSing at the local gun shop...........they have long standing relationships with several distributers and the LGS is being told by the distributers that they don't have ; .22lr ammuniton, S&W 15-22 mags, P-mags...............on and on.....

Some guns are showing up...... but any common ammo is dribbling in at best .... as to .22lr; when it comes in, they may only get 1000-5000 rounds. For them the UPS guy is like waiting for Santa Claus....... they don't know what might show up.

I can see a distributer not being able to meet all the LGS orders in full...... and limiting the amount that gets shipped to any one shop...... but at least trying to get some stock to their longstanding customers!

We hear places like CCI are running around the clock......... and there are what 5-6 major manufactuers of .22lr ammo.

Corporations are in business to make money ; they aren't making money by sitting on their products........ and right now they could be selling everything they can make.................... with a 10-15% extra profit.

But no one in the distribution chain seems to know where the product(s) is!!

Without going to "tinfoil hats" and "black Helicopters"...... where is all the "stuff"????

Where I live, people line up and wait for the stores to open on the days they know they put out ammunition. People buy the limit (if there is such a restriction) and exhaust the supply in an average of 10 minutes. When there is no limit, people will buy 10,000 rounds (or more) of 22LR at a time.

I am NOT going to stand in line to buy ANYTHING. At some point, the crazies will have more ammo than they can store. I can wait.

The problem is that all the people that always bought only a few boxes of ammo when they went to shoot have been buying thousands of rounds and hoarding them. I would venture to say there are individuals out there that have two lifetimes worth of ammo tucked away. Until this stops there won't be a "normal" supply. I'm glad I always handloaded everything and kept at least a case of 22 RF on hand at all times. I will keep at my normal consumption rates about two years supply on hand or the equivalent reloading components.

The shortages are everywhere, I used to be able to go into walmart or academy at any given time and buy as much 9mm, 45acp, 357mag or 38sp as I wanted, not anymore. Walmart here and we have 2 super stores never has handgun ammo anymore, academy gets shipments in frequently but they sell out immediately. I feel for the folks that didn't have a good reserve built up.

The FACTORIES are producing, and selling it all to Users, Hoarders, New Enthusiasts, etc.

Demand is far outstripping supply.

BUY some STOCK in firearms related industries as they are in BOOM-TIMES.

The market will eventually cool off, but not for awhile as the POLITICOS keep ir a HOT TOPIC of interest.

reload everything with a centerfire primer that i shoot and have said before i have a lifetime supply for those calibers. the problem, maybe, is 22lr. i shoot about 2500 per year and as of last inventory am down to about 20,000 rds. maybe by the time i am low there will some available.

I've known these guys for 18 years........ they've have orders in with all their distribitors (4-5) and since Christmas they have only been able to get <10,000 rounds of .22lr. Half of that was a case of CCI SV they got in Feburary, another 3-4, 525 packs of Remington golden bullets about a week ago.

The local Walmart ammo shipments are 4-10 boxes of .40 and .45....... no .22lr. The local Dunham's hasn't had .22s on the shelves since "early January"........ it seems like "stuff" isn't even getting into the pipeline.

If everybody decided to buy a 10 year supply of toilet paper all at once, you'd have the same situation. When demand outstrips supply, you get widespread shortages.

We are our own worst enemies. Its like a run on the bank. Buy what you need and leave some for the next guy.

I have a good supply of all my centerfire calibers, but I got caught short on the .22 thing. I never thought my fellow shooters were such Panicky Petes.

I'll wait it out. Capitalism will win out - the people who make .22 ammo will crank out all they can until this madness subsides, then supplies will exceed demand and the price will come down.

The local Dunham's hasn't had .22s on the shelves since "early January"........ it seems like "stuff" isn't even getting into the pipeline.

That's because either you were not at the store early enough to see it and/or the Dunham's staff are buying it and reselling for profit. The "stuff" is in the pipeline, it's just that you are not stood at the right place to see it. I suspect your LGS is too far down the food chain in the current panic/hoarding/gouging business model to see much ammo, especially .22.

This is about the third or fourth thread on this subject and the answers are always the same. There is a suitable meme for this but I cannot use it on Lee's site.

I was at Tulsa last weekend plenty of ammo for sale if you can stomach the price.
50 rounds 9mm FMJ $25.00 PCM
50 rounds 45 230 FMJ $25 ?? PMC
50 rounds 40 $21.95 ?? can remember the brand
525 bulk packs of .22 $75 and up

I guess my thought is that sooner or later them folks will run out of money or run out of room in their squirrel holes.

After 2008 I decided that every time I went to WalMart or Academy I was going to leave with some ammo. I have enough to last a while. ;) I had a small windfall last year and walked out of WalMart with somewhere between 4-5000 rounds, then went to Academy and bought 2000 more. Last year, I could buy 500 .40 S&W JHPs from N. Georgia Arms for ~ $140, and I did. Several times.

The only thing I've bought during the current ammo recession is shotgun ammo. I've shot a little and replaced it, and I bought a couple of .410s, so I've been buying a little of that.

And no, none of it is for sale. :D

A friend of mine is a manager at a local Super Wmart. Ammo comes in haphazardly, and when it arrives it's usually in a very small denomination. Last week, he told me .22 lr came in on the truck ... two packs of 525. T-W-O for a Super WM. That ain't much, and it didn't last 10 minutes.

Here in Kalifornistan unemployment is around 15%-20% in real numbers. A lot of those guys have learned the Walmart stocking times and go wait in line and make their rounds. Then they flip the ammo on Calguns for $50/525 or more. And people snap it up. They take friends & family so they can get multiples of the 3 box limit. As long as these guys are making $$$ the shortage will continue.

My Story

Just wanted to say I'm new to the Forum and I have been coming here for months. Love reading all your stories you guys/girls post and having been staying up to date on the ammo shortages. But I joined today to share my quick story on 22LR ammunition the other day.

The wife and I were at the local Rural King here in Marion, Ohio and we were shopping for ammunition for our rifles. 22LR was what we were really after but after about 15 mins of looking through their case there wasn't any to be found. I was also after 7.62x54 as well and there none of that to be had there either. So I settled for a round file for sharpening my chainsaw blade and went to the counter to pay for it. When I got up there the gentleman behind us I noticed had a box of 9mm in his hand. Before you know it we got to talking about the ammunition shortages and the 22LR got brought up. He told me that I should check down the road at the sporting goods place and that their truck just pulled in and they might have ammunition on it. So I shook his hand and thanked him for the information and I quickly paid for my item and we jumped in the car and sped off to the local Dunham's Sporting Goods.

When we got there the young lady greeted us with a smile and I asked her for the ammunition/hunting goods dept. She said if your after 22LR we just got a shipment in. I told her, she must be a mind reader.

So we headed back to the counter and there was 1 gentleman in line. I quickly scanned the shelf behind the counter and saw Remington 22LR 525 boxes. 3 of them. I was like OMFG!!!! And when I turned around to tell the wife I noticed another gentleman that was behind us as well. I immediately asked him if he was after the 22LR and he said yes he was. I then asked the gentleman in front of me if he was after the 22LR as well. And he said yes as well.

I then took charge of the matter and asked both gentleman to make deal between the 3 of us. I told them both I would buy 1 box and let them have the other 2 between them.

This was kind of a touchy situation and I was kind of eyeballing the guy in front of me being as it was all based on his decision as to whether or not he would go in on this deal.

I then began to tell my story to both of them about my being an honest type of gun owner and how I would never become a hoarder for ammunition and I would never keep someone from buying out everything on the shelf and why I was asking if they were both after the same thing I was after. I know I know, guilt trip!! lol

In the long run we all agreed with each other and each one of us bought 1 box of 22LR 525 boxes. We all gave each other a firm handshake and thanked one another and purchased our ammo and left the store.

It was a good day and I met 2 more gun owners that had the same respect I show to fellow gun owners as well.

I just happen to be in the right spot at the right time.

And the funny part was I never did get my 7.62x54 that day either. :D I was too happy to find some 22LR I completely forgot all about it till today as I'm writing this post.
