I would like to replace the barrel on my 686 with a 4" one. Called S&W, they apparently do not sell them. Having difficulty located a source (Brownells and Midway don't appear to sell this either). Is there an aftermarket source?

thx

Will S&W replace with a 4" if you send it in. Bet they would sell you one then. I had a 4" barrel replaced on a 66-1 reasonable price.

Yes they will. BUT, 2-3 months wait minimum, plus a couple hundred $ shipping to/from.

Yes they will. BUT, 2-3 months wait minimum, plus a couple hundred $ shipping a firearm to/from. Not even close to reasonable, at least for me. Plus, the person I talked with said they didn't have one in stock, no timeline to get one.

Epiphany :D

I have a Clark Match barrel on my Model 41, so called them. No idea why I didn't think of it sooner.

They are making me a Match Bull barrel in 4", maybe 4 weeks out. $200. Yahoo.

Here is a link to a picture of the barrel on one of their custom guns. I'm getting stainless to match my gun.

Not to be too nosy sir - but $200 for the barrel - but not installed, right? i would like to replace the 4-inch barrel on my older 686 with a 3-inch barrel & would assume ... they could make a 3-incher also?

Great info - Thanks!

Yes, $200 but my LGS will install. As i remember, S&W's price for their barrel was close to that price, but i had to then pay them another couple hundred to install, plus a couple hundred to/from shipping. Would have made more sense to just buy another gun.

In my case, the DA on my 686 is the best I have ever seen, and I shoot DA exclusively. So another gun was a bit chancy.

No idea if Clark would make one 3", I'd call them.

Not to needlessly drag out this thread - but S&W's barrel work is reasonable, I think. I picked up a nice 4-in M64 RB last year and wanted a 3-incher. Found the barrel on GB - the mothership charged a half-hour labor ($45 at that time IIRC) + the usual $45 inspection fee (which covers their FedEx label for shipment to them) and another $35 return shipping. The work was perfect in my opinion - and it looks like they re-blasted the the frame topstrap ...

686 Barrel

Does anyone know if the 681 barrel is th same? If so I would sell one cheap. I had a 681 that the previous owner changed and cut the new one down to 3".

It would attach. The threads are the same. The front sights are different, because the M681 is fixed sight gun and the M686 is adjustable. The front sight on a M681 is integral to the barrel (can't be easily changed) and too low for a M686.

That's substantially lower than what they estimated for me. However, I definitely would prefer my own Smith to do the work, I have known him for many years, he has worked on many on my guns. Plus, it will only take him a week or so. Very happy getting a Clark, I think their quality at least similar to S&W as it stands today.
