Picked up this Pre 10 project gun the other day pretty cheap and I would like to get the metal refinished and new CCH for the hammer and trigger. Grips will be replaced with Grasshorn stags.

Would you guys send it back to S&W or somewhere else?

Ford's does very nice work but I don't want to wait a year.

Take a look at Glenrock Blue in Glenrock, WY. Their work is absolutely first rate and their prices are reasonable. They've done a couple of Smiths for me in the past and, had I not known of the refinish, I would never have known the guns had been reblued. They also do the finish work for some of the very best gunbuilders in the country. Google 'em - they have a website.

I GOTTA ROLL WITH DWalt AND jonny23sb ON THIS ONE. THAT REVOLVER IS JUST SHOWING THE SIGNS OF ITS YEARS OF USE--NOT ABUSE. IT DOESN'T LOOK BAD AT ALL. YOU ARE GOING TO DEVALUE IT BY REBLUING IT, AND BLOW MONEY IN THE PROCESS. JUST CLEAN IT THOROUGHLY, AND PUT A FEW COATS OF WAX ON IT. YOU MIGHT CONSIDER JUST HAVING THE STOCKS REFINISHED, IF THEY ARE ORIGINAL TO THE REVOLVER. THE STOCKS TEND TO COLLECT GUN OIL AND GRIME. THAT WON'T DRASTICALLY ALTER THE VALUE AND IT WILL FRESHEN THE APPEARANCE UP, WHILE RETAINING THE FACTORY LOOK. ITS A HANDSOME PIECE…...

It's your gun. You bought it. You can do what you want with it. But, refinishing this gun will take value away that can never be replaced. For us enthusiasts it hurts to think of that happening. The old Smiths are really special to us. For us it would be like remodeling Thomas Jeffersons' home with laminate flooring, a media room, and marble counter tops. It would sure look new, but the historical value is lost forever. It's your business and your money. You have a right to do what you want.

I agree with most of the previous posters. Your revolver is too nice to
refinish. Put a few coats of Ren wax on it, refresh the grips with some
linseed oil and leave it alone. Once you reblue it you can never go back.

I'm curious as to why you refer to it as a "project gun". Do you plan on doing other things to it in addition to the refinishing and stag grips?

If not, I'd leave it alone, especially if it's just going to be an occasional shooter or plinking gun.

The gun has major appeal just as it is right now. It may be just one of thousands made, but it has a history, whatever that history might be. I'd respect the history and keep it as it is. Or sell it to someone who'll appreciate it for what it is.

After reading the above posts, I might just leave it alone. The majority of the guns I collect are immaculate. I have S&W's from the 50's through the 80's and all are show room original. I got into this pre 10 for $300 and thought I could make an old piece of history shine for a few hundred more. Now, I'm just thinking of making it a shooter.

IMHO, THAT'S THE SENSIBLE THING TO DO, bassetman1974…...
