Hello,

While I just was accepted to a new gun club after waiting many years on the wait list.

One of the events they have is what they call a "3 handgun shootout"

This involves various targets using a 22lr, 38 revolver and 45 revolver/semi-auto of your choice.

I am all set for 22lr. I love my GSG 1911. As far as 45, I have an M&P. Although, I want to save up to get a 617 next year because when I use my brothers I can 10 ring all day long with that gun.

Which 38 revolver would be best? I was looking at the 686 but I cannot deal with what seems like 20lb DA pull. While I like a lot of the snubbies, not sure how accurate I would be with 2" or less barrel so I was thinking maybe a 4" or 6" revolver.

Are there any recommendations or certain models you would suggest?

On a side note, there seems to be several variations of the 686 but I cannot tell the difference from the smith website.

Find a S&W Model 14 and I bought a 6 inch Model 14-3 last year that was like new for $430. They were the target S&W of choice in the 50's and 60's in competition and S&W made sure they were accurate and smooth because they knew that they were used a lot in competition. In fact the Model 17 has the same size, balance and weight so the competition shooters could use them for practice with cheap ammo.

If this is Bullseye, you will need one that holds 'em at 50 yards. The above mentioned K-38 is the most popular, but any good S&W will do.

What do the -X Designations mean? I looked online and have seen -3, -4, -5. Used, the best I have been able to find K-38 for ~$600 but I will keep looking. Thanks

My problem is that I am not sure what "any good S&W" happens to be. The masterpiece models are legend, others I am not familar with.

As far as how the gun games go, it could be bullseye one week, it could be falling plates another week, or shooting Zombies. To keep it interesting the shoot boss keeps mixing it up to make it fun but to emphasize different skills.

For example, last week you had shoot gords at 100yards with your revolver.

It is pretty much impossible to go wrong with the K38 Target Masterpiece from the pre-model #s to the 14-X. There have been several strings about them on the forum. One was about the later 14-6 or so variants with the full lug barrel, etc - much as I hate full lug barrels, the writeup was positive.
