I have had the recent good fortune to acquire
two 625 .45 ACPs. one is a dash 2, and the other, a dash 6. They both shoot exceptionally well with the stock 5" barrels.
Both are 98%+ cosmetically. The action of the dash 6 seems to be marginally better. Also, the dash 6 is the best fitted and finished stainless S&W I have ever owned.

One of the two, is about to become a Mountain Gun. Which would you choose, and why??
Best,
Gary

Will both fire each chamber without moonclips? If not, I'd pick the one that will.

Does your -6 have a hammer mounted firing pin? I'd want that feature on a mountain gun.

Based on your description, I'd say keep the -6 factory, as current fit & finish is the best of the two. Your gun smith can bring the -2 up to par, during the course of the custom work.

Of course on the other hand, I would have to ask, which one is worth more - as is? The most valuble of the two, should remain stock.

Bear in mind though, that a custom 625 "MG" will probably not bring back your investment, if sold down the road.

That's a very hard question to answer. I have two 625's and I have to wonder day to day which is the "best". Mine are: 625-6 (5") and a 625-8 JM Special (4"). Frankly, both are near wonderful.

I am a shooter, not a collector and frankly both of them shoot extremely well.

K-22,

I like my Mountain Gun, but would not swap barrels for a paltry 1" difference. 5" N frames are great. Just get a Mountain Gun and leave the 5 incher intact, especially if it shoots well.

Lion,
PLease tell me where there is a pre lock, 98%, .45ACP Mountain Gun I can purchase for less than $600 total investment. I will be on that like a duck on a June bug.
Best,
Gary

Hi Gary,

I bought a 625-6 (.45 Colt, not ACP)last year for $499. I like it even more than I expected I would. If I had my druthers, I would probably opt for a 5" heavy barrel, but I like the tapered 4" just fine. They are getting scarcer, but in bad economic times you may find what you're looking for at a good price. I just hate the thought of removing any barrel that shoots well. I hope you find what you want!
Cheers,
TJC
