So...which one would you buy first:

4" 66 No-Dash Stainless with original box, papers, cleaner

or

3" 66-2

If you can find the 3 inch Mod 66 at a decent price I would jump on it first. There are far fewer of the 3 inch available.
You amy also consider the 2 1/2 inch, they are nice shooters too.

Purchase the 3" if you can get it at a decent price. I have one in a 66-2 and would not part with it. The 4" is much easier to obtain.

Marshal Tom,

Ahhh...therin lies the rub. "Decent price" covers a lot of ground in reference to a 3" 66.

There's one for sale now in the "for sale" board here for $850. Haven't seen one on any gun website for less than $1000.

I would say a get the 3inch first. Not that many laying around. The 4inchers are alot more common.

Three inch anything S&W are selling (or at least asked) for top dollar currently. If you can find one at a decent price I'd get it, if not get the four incher.

Getting the 66-2 3inch first would likely be more prudent than a 66 4 inch. The 3 inch is the tough one to get especially if you have plans on getting the whole set of 66 s. Both of mine are 66, the 4 inch (my old service revolver) and the 2 1/2 inch, a recent acquisition once I determined the 3 inch wasn't going to come my way within my budget.

classifieds, friends, relatives, neighbors, garage sales.
Wherever there is a gun you may find a 3 inch model 66.
I get an E mail notification every time a new model 66 is listed on Gun broker. I look every single day, probably for 3 or so years now.

How much time do you want to spend? It is not easy, but quite rewarding
once the collection comes together.

3 inchers can be found in the $700. range, but one must be vigilant.
I have probably passed on 16 to find the 6 that I have.

Best of luck.

Well...I made an offer on a 3" today. Here's my story.

I called a local shop and they had a 66-2 4" for $425 out the door. I looked at the gun and it was in OK condition; not great, but not bad either. The issue was that it wasn't that special.

Then I went to a small shop by my house and the owner had a 2.5" 66 as a personal carry gun. I handled that one and was hooked on the shorter barrel.

Got home, got online, and made an offer on a 3".

It's probably more than I wanted to spend, but what the heck...you only go around once.

Looking forward to getting it. Thanks for all the advice...I am happy with my choice.

By the way...a big shout-out to my wife. She's totally supportive of my new addiction and is one cool lady to boot.
