Which 9mm

I'm thinking of getting a 9mm. I have narrowed it down to a S&W 459 or a Glock 17 2nd gen.. Both around the same price and condition. I have had Glocks in the past but never a 459 + I really like it. Are there any +s over the Glock. I'm right on the edge and hoping someone here can push me off on the Smith side.

Why would you buy a 459 instead of the newer M&P? I really like the ergonomics of the M&P's.

The M&P isn't one of the choices. But thanks for the advice. Is there something wrong with the 459?

Of those two, what would it be used for?

Concealed carry? Range use? Home defense?


I prefer the G17 as a good all around gun, because I have a lot more trigger time on them (issued a G22 for nine years). I also prefer a consistent trigger pull, but if you prefer a DA/SA then the 459 is a good older weapon. The FBI issued them back in the day to their SWAT guys.

I had a close friend who had one, I put some Uncle Mikes grips on it and it really was a nice handling gun.

Your probably right regarding the trigger. The Glock will have a better trigger. It will be carried so was thinking the 459 would be a bit flatter.

459 is probably not much flatter than a Glock. Its a double stackmag, too. If thinner is better, think 439/539/639.

If really thin is your goal, try one of the Kahr offerings.

your choices are two good, albeit very different guns. Personally I'm partial to DA/SA guns with hammers so obviously I'd lean toward the S&W.

I would say the 459 just because they are not making them anymore. you can always pick up a glock later.

No coin needed. The S&W 459 is a much better gun, and like someone else said, you can always get a Glock later.

If the 459 is in great shape, get it before it's gone!

Why a 459 over a M&P? (and you can always get an M&P later as well)

The 459 is an extremely well made all metal framed gun with lifetime warranty and handles much better than the plastic guns, as far as second shots, no felt recoil, etc.

Other guns to consider which beat Glocks hands down in 9mm- 5906, (3rd gen- full size Stainless frame) 5903 (alloy frame); 3913 (3rd gen compact alloy frame)

I would recommend the 5904 or 5906 over the 459 as the 3rd gen models have more options available for them--such as arched grips. The 459 did have an arch main spring housing option--but like hens teeth trying to find one. The 5904 & 5906 allow for the option of Crimson Trace grips as well--which aren't available for the 459.
