Which Front Sight for my 5" 625-6

Howdy all, I've had this 5" 625-6 for a couple years now and it hasn't been getting shot much. I just don't like the front sight. Poor excuse, I know.

I'm thinking of replacing the sight with either a gold bead or a fiber optic. Use will be primarily plinking out to 25 yards at an outdoor range. I do some bowling pin matches at an INDOOR ranger and occasionally I may throw a shot out to 50 yards just for the heck of it.

So...what say you? Gold Bead, Fiber Optic or...? I'd likely go with SDM to source the sight as I've had good luck with their stuff on other projects.

I've got that same revolver & it never occurred to me to change out the front sight. A gold bead would be nice. I like the grips on yours. I'm on the waiting list for a pair of Spegels for mine.

The gold bead may be very classic, but I have never found it did anything to enhance the sight picture. he Fiber optic however does "stand out" and make itself much more visible and many people like them. But, anytime I want precision accuracy, I want a Patridge front sight for a clear well defined sight picture.

H. Richard is right on, but for me the gold bead will give a very good immediate fast action close up sight picture. Not so good for precision shooting. It also will reflect light in sunlight that will sometimes deflect point of impact. I did not find the fiber optic sights helped at all. The best precision sight for me continues to be the regular black Patridge sight, enhanced by carbide blackening.

Given that the target is the B-27, I need a front sight that will be clearly visible when viewed against the black of the target. Will be following this thread for practical answers to the best choice of front sight... and perhaps rear sight blade. Sincerely. brucev.

This is the 'problem' that I'm trying to solve. What front sight does best against a solid black target?

With a 6 o'clock hold, you can use a black front effectively. But all of my other revolvers and pistols are setup for POA=POI, IOW covering the target with the front sight.

I'm leaning strongly towards the Fiber Optic from SDM as seen here:

I have this sight on my 5" 629 that I use for deer hunting. With this sight, you 'almost' get the best of both worlds. The bright FO dot, with a housing that is squared and black. If you can train yourself to adjust for correction (either sight in with 6 0'clock hold on the post or covering with the dot) when switching between dot and post, you're all set.

I'm using a Hi-Viz fiber optic on my 6" 686+ and love it. I've used a gold dot front sight before and prefer the fiber optics. Gold dot is good, but sometimes needs to catch the light just right in low light conditions (like indoor ranges).
