I have a model 28 -2 marked NYSP and a model 28 no dash. The -2 has a red ramp front sight, the no dash has a solid metal front sight. I am going to have to sell one of them and wonder which is more valuable. They are both in about the same condition. Both are 4". Which would you sell?

Jack ,sorry to hear you have to sell one of your Highway patrolman.

All things considered equal ,I would definitely keep the
earlier gun ,being a 4 screw and such.

Hopefully the NYSP gun will bring a premium being marked
as it is.

Good luck ,

Jack - that's a tough one.
I would definately struggle getting rid of either. Does the 28 no dash have it's original, diamond magnas (numbered to the gun)?

I don't collect revolvers with police markings so for me I would keep the no dash if they are in the same condition. As far as value goes if someone collects models with police markings you may get more for that revolver in a sale.

I'm sure others can provide more specific information.

I don't have the original grips for either one, I would say they both shoot about the same. The 28-2 has a little more blue wear on the front edge of the cylinder.

Keep the oldest one then. It probably is the most valuable now, and will appreciate in value the fastest, IMHO.

If you decide to sell the NYSP gun there are a good number of folks out there that do collection used police guns. Some collect the guns from specific agencies. The trick is to find one of these folks.

The 28-2 was my first duty gun and my first N-framed S&W. I sold it when I was young and foolish to help pay for the MKIV Series 70 Government Model that replaced it on my duty belt. When I decided I should have one in the safe, for old time sake, I bought a 28 no-dash 4-screw. Just a nicer gun over all than the -2 models, at least in my mind.
