I use both a S&W M&P 9mm Pro and 40c (my carry gun) for IDPA. I use the sights that came with the Pro (flat black back, green FO front) and really like them much better than the Novak FO red front and green back on my 40c.

What do you use? Why?

IDPA Sights

Red Fiber Optic Front Sight
Old Age and Cataracts
Use the same Type Front on my Trap Guns, wish they would allow them on SASS Long Guns.

My eyes are drawn to the green fiber optic on my M&P PRO 9 ....love it!

Check out 10-8 Performance for M&P sights and basepads. You will not be disappointed.

I checked out that web site and see they have three options for the front sight:
Tritium
Brass
FO

Which do you use and why do you like it over the others?

Also, I am a little confused about the base plate. What is that for?

For competition FO. For carry bead or FO. Rear is the one you want for either. Base pads are for magzines.

I just use the stock sights on my Pro. Works fine for me.

Novak black blade on the rear and red HI-Viz fiber optic on the front. I have found this arrangement allows me to pick-up the front sight quicker and my eyes pick up the red sights better than the green sights.

FO breaking all the time

I love FO on the front and flat black on the rear. The problem with FO is that they break all the time. I do a LOT of shooting and they seem to fall out at the worst time (i.e. during a match).

When I put a new rod in, I am very careful to make sure it is tight. I do not misuse my arms in any way. They are always holstered when not in use.

How do you keep your FO's from breaking and falling out?

I recently put a set of 10-8 sights on my 45FS. I went with a fiber optic front as the tritiums were out of stock and I'd never spent any time with FOs. The 10-8s have three "bridges" or whatever you'd call them supporting the FO. I initially put about 600 rounds thru my pistol trying out the new sights. So far I still have the original insert in place. I'm pushing 50 and I really like the way my eyes are drawn to the red insert when I present the pistol. This is a duty pistol so I'm watching what I do with it. I've grown comfortable having tritium sights on guns, at least on the front, however, when using hand held or weapons lights in low light conditions, I've noticed that the backwash of light cancels out the glow of the tritium, silouetting the sights, thus giving you a standard iron sight picture. If the 10-8 FO version continues to work, I may not miss tritium. They seem pretty durable. In daylight shooting, I am getting my sights on target a lot faster.

Also take a look at Heinies, even though they don't offer an FO option.

10-8 Performance = durable and works every time, the FO's are no exception. You likely know that the guy who designs, makes, and sells them is LE (including SWAT) and thus he is quite familiar with what works and does not. Check out the 10-8 Performance web presence; you will see lots of good LE related info, especially for the 1911 platform.

If you are losing FO out of sight or have to change it frequently upon breakage, it is likely installation is not properly done or particular FO you are using has an issue.

Never had a problem with my HiViz front.

Truglo TFO's have a little problem occasionally.

Small drop of clear epoxy solved that so far.

Good Luck
