WHICH TO BUY

If you get the V-comp you will probably have to buy new unless you get lucky. I assume the new V-comp, TRR8 & the R8 are on the CA.DOJ. approved list but you may have trouble getting someone to ship a used one to CA.

I have not seriously looked at the TR R/8. I know there are other models of the 627 but, frankly, I just narrowed it down to the V-Comp. You seem to have experience with both. Could you give me a bit more detail on why you prefer this model over the V-Comp? Thank you, B_Scan

Well like I mentioned I didn't have the .357 version I had the .44mag 629 V-Comp, but they are similar, main difference being the 629 is 4" and the 627 is 5" and has moon clips. I didn't care for the porting on the 629 as it really didn't do much for recoil IMO compared to the extra weight/length of the 629 Competitor and it didn't balance as well. Now to extrapolate that to a comparison with the 327 TRR8 (or R8), while not an apples to apples comparison, I really like the balance of the 327 and the light weight doesn't seem to be a drawback with the 5" barrel for .357. An added bonus for a self defense/night stand gun is the removable (or non-removable on the R8) lower rail for adding a nice weapon mounted light*. Additionally there is a removable top rail for adding a red dot for range or competition shooting and the 327 has the interchangable front sight where the V-Comp has a dovetailed sight.

I'm not trying to tell you what to buy though, just pointing out my preferences and some options. Hope you find what you're looking for and enjoy it.

*This is my 325 TR set up for the night stand as reference for the light rail, same bottom rail setup as the 327...

THANK YOU BIG TUBBY

The used guns are very rare. Every once in awhile you might find one online but they are scooped up quickly. I know the V-Comp is on the CA DOJ list for sure (checked today) and I suspect the TRR8 is as well, but I will double check. Thank you

THANKK YOU B_SCAN

Thanks B_Scan. Your comment have been truly been helpful. Your gun as shown in the picture is a very nice piece. Anyone coming in at night is going to have quite a surprise! Thank you again for taking your time to respond.

THANK YOU, BOB

Hi Bob:
Tried to get back to you but email bounced back, so I thought I would try this way to reconnect. First, I can't thank you enough for your email. I have been shooting for several years but I have a long way to go in building my knowledge about firearms and competitive shooting, so your wisdom is very helpful. After doing my research, reading all the threads, and searching the CA DOJ list, I was leaning to the 627 V-Comp. As the thread went on, there were actually three guns in the mix: the V-Comp, the 686 Competitor and the 627 TRR8. I later found that the TRR8 is not allowed for sale in CA - so that is now out. On balance, the key benefits the V-Comp would offer me are: an 8 shot capacity, the ability to use moon clips, and less recoil due to the compensator (I understand there are some pros and cons with the compensator). To my mind, however, all good advantages over 686 Competitor. I know your comments are primarily about competitive shooting. I am definitely interested in competitive shooting but it would not be my sole, or even primary reason, for buying the gun. However, I would want the flexibility of being able to shoot competitively. I guess my biggest fear is that, because there is so much I do not know, I do want to buy one gun only to wish I had purchased another. Let em ask you, then: Would the V-Comp model rule me out of competitive shooting? Would I be more limited as to competitive class(es) with the V-Comp as compared with the 686 SSR? And lastly, given all you know about my needs and plans, in the final analysis, which would you suggest - V-Comp or SSR?

Both versions of the R8 or TRR8 are on the list...

327-1 TRR8 SKU 170269 / Alloy, Stainless Steel Revolver 5" .357 Magnum 10/13/2014

I want to thank all of you who were kind enough to respond to my question with your comments. The choices were tough and as time went on, other guns were suggested as further alternatives. I looked at them all. However, after reading all the comments, doing my research, and thinking a lot about it, I decided to purchase the 627 V-Comp. Thanks again to all who took their time to help out. Sixshooter1944

I think you made a great choice. I really like my 627 v-comp. It is so smooth shooting and I find it very accurate. I think it's great, the first 357 that I like even better then my Pythons. I just smile thinking about. Enjoy it!

THANKS JINDODOG

I am very much looking forward to receiving the gun. I have notified the dealer of my decision and I am giving the deposit on Monday. Looks like a four month wait. Maybe a Christmas present from me - to me. Thank you, again

Personally, I would keep working to buy both, and THEN retire. Good luck.
