Congratulations, I chose the Kimber for you!

It's always personal preference, of course. A Colt, S+W or Springfield would work too, but definitely a 1911 if you don't already have one.
 
Keep in mind, that if you have a house gun, and use it to protect your house or its inhabitants, the local constabulary will take it away from you until the case is closed. It may have funny engravings or other things done to it. In other words, get a gun you won't feel bad losing if you have to shoot a bad guy with it. A nice Sigma in .40S&W or a good used 45 series Smith might serve your needs.
 
You dont want a Kimber period. The last thing you want is an "iffy" gun when there is something at stake and there is always something at stake.
 
It ultimately depends on what fits your hands the best but, I like the M&P or the P99. Both are great shooters and very reliable.
