Which would you choose?

The model 19 will always be worth more than the 686. It's a classic configuration and long out of production. The 686 is way down the totem pole compared to the 19 regardless of the relative condition.

There is a very nice nickel one just like it for sale on this very forum asking $565 SHIPPED! How can such a rare incredible piece of Smith history like that still be for sale? LOL. Try buying that 686 for that price in THAT condition....... bad trade,

I bought a 686 4" in box for 300 last year. You can find deals on them. The 19 just oozes class in any barrel length.

686's (not all) are common...a 19 snub in that condition is not. Since I do not hunt with pistols a long barreled 686 would not appeal to me so I would have jumped on the 19 and been very happy. Nice choice.

What are you talking about? the 686 is worth more than the 19s in every barrel length. Where are you getting your prices? I can guy 19s all day long for under $600. Not gonna happen with the pre-lock 686s.

Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE the 19 and is one of my favorite shooters..... but they are in 6" and 4"! That snubby is not going to compete and he is MY partner! LOL

Everyone notice how my partner is staying out of this now..... he knows he told me he was done buying fondle guns and only buying guns to help us win competitions! That's just like him! LOL. Nice chatting with you guys.

Chaos, lots has happened in a year..... I will buy every pre lock 686 you can find for $400! That's a $100 profit for you on each gun!!!

yup, but I am not a dealer so buying for profit is out of the question :)

I didn't say the 686 is bad, or I wouldn't own any. I am just saying if I had to make the choice he did I would have chosen the same way. I love my zr1, and I love my truck. The 19 is a vette and the 686 is a truck

LOL...... I too am not arguing that point. I am saying that from a shooting PARTNER's point of view he made the wrong decision. Which one would I buy first? the 19 of course. But when he is MY partner I want to see that long tube in his hand...... not a snubby. Peace everyone.

Plstu I think my 5" 627-3 V-Comp is more than capable of handling bowling pins at 25 yards!! And I believe our record speaks for it self 12-0 in our friendly matches. So A long tube 686 is not a necessity.

I think you made the right choice but I am personally a snubby fan. I dont think you can really have two many of them. I am assuming that picture is the gun you got that looks NICE.

My vote is you made a good trade. I had a 27 with an 8 3/8" and it was simply too much barrel. I think you'd get more practical use out of that 19, besides the fact it's just darned good looking. I'm not even a snubby fan and I would have made that trade, good job!

Well, there's my partner! So explain the "necessity" of the snub? I KNOW you ain't gonna carry it.... Simply put, I voted for my own selfish reason!

Now that leaves two possibilities; you either bought it to fondle or resell. Right choice to add to a collection and fondle but I disagree with the people that say you can get more money for it....

Either way, I will see you in the desert, can't wait to shoot that 19!

I see more 2.5 19s than 8 3/8 inch 686s. Any other barrel length in the 686 other than the 8 and the 2.5, I would have even taken the 19 too. That is the best barrel length in the 19 imo for collecting and beauty. And with it being P&R, it is neck and neck with the 686-0 8 3/8 inch. Those 8 3/8 686-0 are not seen very often. He got the one he wanted so he made the right decision without a doubt. I doubt there is 50 or 100 bucks at most either way on the 2 guns value wise, but probably not that much. jmho.

I totally agree Big Guns. As long as he leaves that snub home on competition day, I am more than happy for him it is a gorgeous gun and I can't wait to shoot it!

I agree with the 19 all day long over the long tube 686. Snub 19's are doing nothing but jumping in value and it being a P/R model makes it even more desireable. Sure, a pre lock and pre MIM 686 is a great gun and I don't think anyone here is denying that. But in more people's minds it seem to hold true to the OP's choice that the 19 is just flat out more desireable.

And by the by, the way you are brow beating your partner if I were him you would be looking for a new partner. I don't openly mock my friend's choice in guns. We may all exchange in some back slapping friendly ribbing but you are really rubbing his face in this one. Just letting you know from a third party perspective.

I'd have done the same as you and chosen the 19 snub. Congrats! Thats a beautiful snub 19! :)

Everything you need in a revolver and nothing you don't! Enjoy yours. Regards 18DAI
