A friend of mine has a S&W 686-2 for sale, but before he can sell it, the yoke screw needs to be replaced. Currently, the cylinder falls forward and out when it's opened.

Does anyone know what part # this requires and where I might find it? Brownells has yoke screws, but I'm not sure which one I need. I think the 686-2 has its own unique yoke screw.

Thanks!

Not that I know whether it does or not, but what makes you believe the -2 has a unique yoke screw? Trying to learn something here, thanks.

In any case, have you guys confirmed each of the sideplate screws are in their proper places? The wrong screw at the forwardmost area of the plate can be problematic.

Call Smith & Wesson, tell them your model number and they will send you the correct part.

In looking at "the book" it appears the yoke retention system was changed with -3, so I would assume the -2 uses the older style screw.

Not too hard to tell. The older yoke screws are the same head size as the other two sideplate screws, it just needs to be fitted. The new style has is a larger screw with a larger head. In a pinch, as this one is missing, try the other round head sideplate screw. It might fit. If it is too long or tight, don't force it. At least it would keep the cylinder from falling off until you can get a new one and fit it. It is not too unusual for the old style screws to be mixed up during cleaning, if one is not careful.
