I think the great kids of posters who spanked are great kids because they got the attention and guidance and example setting required, not the spanking per se.

It's a very personal choice. My cousin and here husband did the non-emotional, formal, spanking thing and they have fantastic kids. But the kids are great because they had a parents that paid attention, are deeply involved, and don't let their kids sit in front of a doggone TV every waking hour.

TV and leaving kids alone to their own devices, or constantly with daycare/babysitters is bad juju.
 
first off let me say that he went to far. now after saying that, i was whipped as a kid but come on this is to far. just as an opinion i thing he had been hittin the bottle came in drunk and pist off and started wailing on her. just another person thinking they can do whatever the hell they want.
 
I agree with others that this went too far but in fairness to all, we don't know what all went on prior to this in the hours, days and weeks before. Apparently she was downloading pirated copyright material which if I remember correctly got a bunch of GA Tech students arrested not long ago. So we don't know if she had done it before and got in trouble prior to this with her parents or what. Was the judge over the top? YES. Was some form of corporal punishment deserved, probably but not this severe.

But why post the video SEVEN years later? She says it's so her dad can get help. Dad says it's because they had a disagreement and he cut off the money. To me, Dad's divorced and daughter posted this video. It says Dad might need help or at least shouldn't be in a family court. But it also says to me that daughter is a grade A number 1 brat.

Now if you will excuse me, I have to get back to more important things like worrying about how Kim Kardashian's fans are doing after the breakup of her 72 day marriage to the love of her life, if her show will be cancelled :eek: and whether Conrad Murray should be keelhauled or simply flayed alive for giving drugs to Michael Jackson. [removing tongue from cheek]

time for a recap of the facts in evidence.
we have the judge who gave his 16 year old girl a serious thrashing.
We have a mother who aided in that thrashing.
We have a vid that surfaced after 8 years
and we have a young woman who released said vid when daddy pulled the plug on support and repossessed her Mercedes.

If after age 14, you need to raise your hand, youve probably blown it as a parent.
her act of making the vid public after he pulled support indicates to me that he did blow it as a father.
He's now supposedly suspended from the bench.
Father .. behold your creation, your failure, and all its consequences ;)
 
Didn't want to watch it. From all I have read, it was an assault...period. I never hit my child and she is in university and doing quite well. She is a great kid and treats others with patience and reason. I wonder where she learned that? She also learned how to handle her Colt 1911 from her parents. She isn't a sap...Just a good person.

I am not very involved with the Bible but I seem to remember something about, "Do unto others...". Now, that makes sense to me. I am not really much for all the smiting stuff.

I once witnessed a woman hitting her toddler in the mall because he slapped the baby in the stroller she was pushing. As she was hitting him she said, " What is WRONG with you? WHERE did you learn to do a thing like that?!"...It would have been funny if it hadn't been so sad.
 
If he beat her like that for something minor, what would he have done if she did something really bad, like putting too much sugar on her Shredded Wheat?

The man is an animal. He should go to jail.

I have no problem with smacking children if they are naughty. I had a few strokes from a belt from my mother. But not repeated, vicious beating. I am neither a better nor a worse person as a result of being punished. I have always known right from wrong, and didn't need to have it beaten into me.

I agree with a lot of what you say. But I don't think that daycare/babysitters are necessarily bad, and more than spanking is in itself necessarily bad or good. As you said, the way the kids turn out depends a lot on parental attention and involvement.

My own son (only child) started going to day care at an early age. At first my wife worked while I finished school. After that, we both needed to work. One swat on the rear was all the spanking I ever had to do. He was no angel; in fact he pulled off some stunts behind my back that I had to laugh about when I learned of them. I stayed very much in his life when his mother and I split. He was a great kid, and now he is a fine young man, a parent, breadwinner and homeowner. He is also smart, witty, and excellent company.

But as has been said, every situation is different. Sure, there are lots of people who got whupped regularly and they turned out fine. But the prisons are full of people who were abused as children, often sexually, but often "just" physically. In fact, some kind of history of abuse is an almost universal common denominator in the prison populations.

I too am dismayed by what I see going on in our society, and what I see going on is a much higher frequency of physical and sexual abuse than most people suspect. Sometimes I think that if all you do as a parent is to refrain from beating and sexually abusing your kids, they will turn out pretty decent however else you raise them. I tried to do a little better than that, but i don't claim to have any special skill or theory about how parenting should be done.

I'm more than a little surprised this thread hasn't been locked or just deleted.

That being said, I watched the video and some of the posts make me feel like I must have been raised by demons or something. I got to the end and thought, "That's it? That's what all the fuss is about???"

Some kid didn't listen to daddy and mommy and instead chose to disobey. Then she wanted to start wailing and blubbering instead of taking her punishment. And I was raised you don't hit women, but this is a kid in need of punishment which I see as a very different subject. The only kids I even see make that much fuss at punishment time are the spoiled rotten kids. My first guess is that she had a lot too much daddy's little princess in her and it was passed due for an attitude change. Hearing that she is 24, college bills paid, and has a Mercedes on top of that kind of tells me I am way more likely correct than incorrect. So then she wants to drop out of college and threatens daddy to release a video of him whipping her fanny… Yep, I'm thinking this only confirms my belief.

And I'm not naive. I know what works for one kid may not work for another. I was always shocked at the kids that "taking away their electricity" actually set them straight. No TV, Nintendo, or computer is punishment??? For me, that was just something I was told from time to time period. But we are each as entitled to have a different opinion just as I am entitled to disagree with it.

Oh well.

I haven't read all the posts, but I'll mention a couple of factors that come into play for me.

The first is the parent-child relationship; when a parent, obviously angry, strikes and curses his child, that is abuse.

Second (and this is the one I don't know if it has been addressed), the male-female relationship. When a male, obviously angry, strikes and curses a female, no matter the age or relationship, it is abuse.

In the article, wasn't some kind of "addiction" on the part of the father mentioned? Could alcohol have been a factor?
 
I also have not read all the responses but I know child abuse when I see it and that was a clear case. Taking a belt to a teenage girl? For an Internet infraction? For any of those on this forum who have daughters, and support this type of punishment, I feel sorry for your child. Is this the way you would handle such a problem? Neither I or my wife would have ever done this to our daughter but I would have taken a belt to anyone who did.
 
I havent watched this, but sounds like he thinks him being a judge he can do as he likes, I have never liked whipping my girls and havent for a long time, you have to get there respect before they are 16, if not a whipping wont do it.

There is wrongdoing on both sides. Daddy for losing his temper and beating the xxx out of his daughter. Seems like daughter is looking for revenge, despite her words in the interview, for Daddy's taking her Mercedes and free money away. Daddy loses points for his 'ain't no big thing' attitude. Mommy reveals that Daddy has a problem but won't reveal what it is. Sounds like a totally dysfunctional family that I don't want near me.

Yeah I have to admit that's a legitimate question. However, despite the motive (maybe the daughter set it up because he'd done similar beatings in the past that were unproveable because he was a Judge, and she wanted indisputeable evidence?) it's still just wrong on so many levels. Good lord man, that is your child. What were you thinking?

How about this? She taped it 8 years ago for spite back then and hung on to it untill now. Sounds like dad and mom are now divorced. Mother and daughter are hanging together. She wants out of college and daddy threatens to take the T-brid away. (Actualy money and support. + mercedes). Mom is hurt from divorce and the mom and daughter are in cahoots. Why did she wait 8 years to show it? Because at the same time mom is hurt, daughter is cut off. They got together.
 
Just my toughts to. Iff the spanking was really that terrible she had shown the video at that time and not now. It stinks.

The mother partcipated in the beating.
 
I knew a guy that married a woman with two daughters. He left the woman. After he left one of the daughters fingered him for molestation. At the last minuet she both failed a lie detector test and then admitted she fingered him because he hurt her mom by leaveing. He was foolish and went back to the mother and things got worse for him.
This could well be what happened in this case. Remember the saying about a woman scorned? The event happened 8 years ago as a rebellious teenager. Sure at the time the mother got in the act when she pulled a good one, plus God knows what other things heated it up. This is 8 years and a divorce away. No doubt the daughter forgave the mom as she no doubt deserved some punishment and realised it, but after the father left and was still supporting the girl and threatned to stop support when she wanted to leave college or whatever they are blackmailing him. Remember, he didnt owe support for her since she was 18, 6 years ago! How many butt head, demonic fathers would support her for 6 years after they didnt have to, plus the huge exspense of college, cars etc? If the truth could be known, and it wont, just how many of you people that thinks he is a demon would still be supporting the girl at 24 years old with the huge exspense of college? Come on, the very ones that have been damning the judge, lets hear what you would be doing? Tell me you would still have been keeping her up!

Could it be she KNEW what was coming by past experience??? SHE didn't set it up and hit him, and drop F bombs, etc....she set it up and filmed it. He is the author of his own misfortune. Yeah, so she waited til 8 years later to post it...so what?? Doesn't make it a less truthful account of what happened, does it??
It might make it unseemly, but really, what difference does it make...the end result is the same, 8 years ago, or yesterday, except 8 years later he isn't gonna go to jail on local charges...
 
yes, but on the other hand IF she ( or Mom ??) went so far as to tape this, knowing it was going to happen, then she could have compounded a BAD situation be putting up MORE resistance, knowing it was going to make the old man go further?, try harder?? make him angrier?? thus MORE 'strokes"??? maybe it was supposed to be a "bend over and take a couple of wacks" ( corporal punishment at school when we were younger...) reach back, get your hand in the way, cause further bruising...ouch, brings back BAD memories....................where were you guys when I was getting a GOOD "strapping"??? heck, my sister NEVER go it ONCE??? unfair child abuse...selective enforcement......

I didn't see anything to on the video to suggest MOM knew it was being filmed....she strapped her daughter pretty good herself....why would MOM video THAT????
The simple, most LOGICAL explaination is that the daughter, from PRIOR experience, KNEW what to expect...and her expectations were fulfilled ...

yes, he did author his own misfortune ( I like that term ... consider it stolen)
the so what part of 8 years .... just how much did that vid get her over the years ..... as much as we want to measure this against our own ideals and select saints and sinners from this, I whole heartily believe there are no saints to be found in this dysfunctional brood.
 
Anytime you talk to someone under 35, the "correct" thing top do is praise them. I have said all the following, but one; although I suspect it will be said by some soccor mom before long.
