I got a white painted serial number on a 1926. What's the safest way to remove it? And no I have no clue as to exactly what it is. Not something I would ever do!

First thing to try is a good solvent. Acetone (but don't get downwind of it), cigarette lighter fluid, even Hoppes, either kind. Put some on, let it sit a while and scrub with an old toothbrush.

That's gonna make a mess.
Toothbrush bristles will melt in contact with acetone or most of the other solvents.
You want an "actual made for gun-cleaning" brush. They use a different grae of nylon.
I like M16 brushes, but I know Hoppes sells one, with a purty orange handle.

It comes out pretty easy. Seems to me I used my wife's nail polish remover and an old toothbrush years ago. Or maybe it was Hoppes. I forget. Either way, even if it does dissolve the bristles, who cares?
Bet a wooden toothpick would do the trick, too.

Got most of it out with Hoppes and a Q tip. One number is still pretty solid. Forgot to buy alcohol yesterday. Will try that next.
