My grandson in law(is there such a thing?!) ensured as to this piece: a break front S & W: sn 263xxx: on barrel - K 32 S & W CT 32: looks to have adjustable rear sight.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

32 S&W CTG The prefix and suffix marks are called dingbats I believe.
Welcome to the forum. Not sure if it is a S&W gun.
ETA: The serial # fits into the S&W.32 Double Action 4th Model

Welcome! If it has an exposed hammer it is a .32 Double Action, and without it a .32 Safety Hammerless. Photos of the frame near the hammer area and rear sight would be helpful but these did not usually come with adjustable sights.

Welcome.
Please provide full pictures of your/his top break revolver.

Welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately we need a little more information to answer either of your questions.

I am guessing that a grandson in law would be the child brought into your son or daughters second marriage and not their or your blood or your child married someone who already had a child.

The top break gun is (as stated above) either a .32 DA or a .32 safety hammer less. Most likely a S&W but other makers can fire a .32 S&W cartridge so not necessarily so.

Photos of the barrel markings (top of barrel) and rear sight and hammer or not will help narrow it down. From the limited photos it appears to be in decent shape and not a boat anchor.

Looking forward to more details.

That is not an adjustable sight! The screw is the pivot for the barrel latch. You are not the first to make this mistake!

Welcome to the Forum. Nice little 32 DA that will probably shoot as well as it did when new. #2 S&W ammunition is still available out there, and being as anemic as it is, offers very little stress on a finely built S&W revolver of about any age. Your 32 Double Action, 4th Model probably shipped around 1905 to 1907.

(He's married to one of my granddaughters!)

That is a scenario that I did not think of. YES he would be your grandson in law.

Nice little gun however it looks like the side plate has been replaced. This will impact collector value but does nothing to affect it as a shooter.

Any idea of approximate value?
John

There were over a quarter-million of the 32 DA manufactured, so value is very low except for pristine examples. That revolver has substantial bluing loss so, without a chance to inspect the gun closely, I would say maybe $200. Many of these little revolvers have lost their single action function, so check the hammer for push-off when cocked by hand. If the single action is not working, less money. Looking closely at the sideplate, I see a good fit, so maybe it is a bluing issue and the sideplate is original??

Finish loss

Finish loss is one of those subjects that I think can be compared to limitless variables from exposure to the elements over many years.
I've seen the exact same type of frame loss on nickeled guns where separate pieces of metal somehow maintain near all of their finish while others Surrounding that piece have lost a bunch.
An Example would be heavy frame loss with zero loss on the cylinder. Looks like the cylinder is replaced or refinished but it's not.
Or the barrel And frame finish is intact and the cylinder has heavy loss and the gun shows no evidence of ever being shot!
It's not a perfect world when it comes to finish application and over a long period of time and exposure often the loss is not even on any gun in question. The result is what you see on the OP's gun.

I'll go further and say the OP's gun simply hasn't been " Touched Up" like so many antiques I've seen on the forum have! I'd bet a lot of us would be dying to put some cold blue on this puppy to fill in the areas of loss! Tell the truth now!
