My usual carry piece has been a 1911-style .45 pistol for many years. Months ago I started experiencing disability in my right (strong) arm and wrist, related to ulnar nerve damage that has since been addressed with two surgeries.
In the meantime I have not been able to handle the larger pistols or recoil without pain. Manually operating the semi-auto pistols was difficult at best, impossible at times.
My choice was a 1979-vintage S&W Model 64 stainless .38 Special M&P revolver, round butt, 2" barrel, formerly issued by the Pueblo (Colorado) police department. Relatively light weight, moderate recoil, easily operable in either hand. Having carried a DA S&W revolver as a duty weapon for many years as a cop, there is more than enough "muscle memory" to make the right things happen without strain.
My surgeries were completed about 6 weeks ago and I am recovering well enough. I remain completely comfortable with the S&W 64.
Now working on getting my eyes repaired (cataract surgeries in both). Weekly trips to the range continue to assure me that I can still deliver with the old S&W revolver if I have to.
Looking forward to getting back in the groove with the .45 pistol, and enjoying the new Sig P229 .40S&W I bought just before my body became less than fully reliable, maybe some range time with the new CZ 455 American .22 LR with open aperture sights (and a set of CZ rings and new 3-9X40 scope) that rely on more visual acuity than I can deliver right now.
For the interim period I do not feel unarmed with the 2" Model 64 at my side.
