Who needs weapons with mugs like this?

Having spent time during my military career taking the required Military Advancement Course, it is interesting to note that the major effort of the military education course is to weed out the true leaders. In today's military, every effort is made to get rid of the true leaders. Leaders like Patton, Nimitz, Halsey, etc. would have been shunted to the side. The goal of the military education courses is to teach the proper way to hold your sword when you hand it over while surrendering!

I am waiting for the release of O'Rielly's book on Patton...."Killing Patton" I have heard their was a certain amount of controversy about Patton's death...Never heard exactly what it was.....I always thought their was controversy concerning not only..Patton but also Montgomery, Rommel, and Puller...All seemed to have had a lot of success, and a lot of detractors?????????????????..Maybe because they were all credited with being warriors, not politicians....

there is an oldish movie out bout this. Its called: Brass Target w/ George Kennedy as Gen Patton, and also has John Cassevetes as some kind of aide or other--to Gen Patton. In true history--the Cassevetes character mysteriously died shortly after Patton did.

The story was confused......

For some reason, probably so as not to demoralize people by the death of a 'war hero' the details about his death were sketchy. I had always heard that a jeep turned over on him. What really happened was that he was depressed after losing his command and was invited to go hunting to cheer him up. He was in the back of a Cadillac when a 2 1/2 ton truck turned in front of them. The driver slammed on the brakes and collided with the truck at very low speed. A few were slightly hurt but Patton wasn't able to brace for the impact and hit his head on the glass partition separating the front from the back seat and sustained a compression fracture in his neck which paralyzed him and made it difficult to breathe. I think the part that they didn't want people to know was that he lingered in traction for 12 days until he succumbed to congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema. When he was told that he wouldn't be able to walk or ride a horse he said, "This is a hell of a way to die." I think that between him falling out of favor and the senseless way he died the powers that be played down his death which made it seem more mysterious than it was.

All Star War????

Interesting concept. What if there were an alien invasion and we could pick anybody to be leaders in a war? To the guys that lead us in WWII we could add, Washington, Caesar, Alexander, Wellington, Sun Tzu, Stonewall Jackson, William T. Sherman, Lee (before Gettysburg), Grant, Rommel, Erick Manstein, Zhukov, David (from the Bible), Yamamoto and a HOST of military and support personnel.

The last people I would want in my army would be George McClellan (great administrator, lousy warrior), Westmoreland, Maurice Gamelin (lost France), Cardigan ( mistakenly ordered the charge of the Light Brigade), Benjamin Butler (lost about everything he did), Custer, Burnside, Hitler (aggressive but deluded and rigid), Benedict Arnold (can't be trusted) This is fun but I gotta stop for dinner.

UPDATE: Oh, and 'Stormin' Norman'.

To bad he was one heck of a good general and warrior...The Soviets didn't fool him one bit...I guess he was expendable...To bad he was a fine warrior and in wars you need warriors....Let the politicians screw things up after the fighting is over.......

If I didn't already recognize them I might think it was the Mods looking at the 'Annoyed with' thread.

I wish these boys were still around to deal with our current troubles.

That's an epic photo. Bad-*** to the bone. Those guys didn't ride around on bicycles licking ice cream cones....

There are no absolutes, of course, but it seems to me that *hooman beans* prior to ~1950 generally look *harder* than many 21st century people.

Why?

I think human existence was more physically demanding and just plain tougher then.

Wasn't he on the original Homeland Security Committee?

Just start reading off the list of Commandants of the Marine Corps and you'll find plenty to match the first picture posted.
