That's all new stuff. Some of them weren't born when we were shaggin' at Sonny's up at Cherry Grove in the early 60's. When they closed,we moved to a concrete slab right on the beach with nuthin' but one shaded light post and a juke box (could shag 'til daylight) for a few bucks (5 plays for a quarter). The Pad at OD was good too when it first opened. Worked at the beach for 5 summers. Best time of my life. Slept maybe 4 hours a night. I wouldn't last 48 hours now. Good memories for the most part.

p.s. Alabama played at the Bowery in MB for years. Cover charge was a buck. Pitcher was $1.50 (BIG money). :D

Fas' Dancin'

Fat Tom and I must be about the same age if he remembers Sonny's and The Pad also. What these videos show is an evolution of the dance that he and I and a lot of really great people danced both at OD and Cherry Grove and then took home with us back to inland SC and NC. What we did was called 'fas' dancin' or the 'dirty shag' and you could get arrested in Myrtle Beach for doing the dirty shag. What you see most in those videos has been learned through dance lessons from shag dance 'instructors'. We learned by observation, imitation, and innovation.
Those were some of the best times of my life, as we hadn't come to realize our mortality and hadn't been worn down by life. I still have friends that I see regularly that I met back then more than 50 years ago. I can still 'shuffle' a little, but not like I could when I was young and immortal. But the memories are etched in stone in my memory and I am still as good as I once was there--once.

When I was at OD in the 70s what most were calling "shag" was really Eastern Swing. But some of the oxford shirt and penny-loafer set were doing the real thing.

Wife and I started to brush up on the shag recently, but morfed it into the swing for a big family wedding.

We had a ball, these young kids can't dance. They get out and wiggle to music, not dance. Some of my nieces remarked they never knew I could dance, told them they should have seen me back when I could.

And like Shaggist said, I learned by watching others, no videos back in the day.

OH YA BABY!!:D

You guys are probably a little older than me. I'm just 57 years old. Used to be a place called the orange barrel at OD. First time I got threw in jail was there. All three times I have been in jail, happened at the strand. OD-NMB-MB.

The good times way out weight the few bad ones. (age 18-21 years old). The cops just wanted our money???. I always wondered, because they never took mug shots or finger prints. Have had my background checked many times.

I have shagged the night away, many times.

Had several friends land in the pokey at OD. Same story, no mug shots or prints. Pay $125 cash (a lot in those days) and someone sober better pick you up.

It was kinda like a "speed trap" for drunks. I can't remember ever having to pay more than $25 bucks and never stayed in more than an hour or two before one of my compadres came to the rescue. :o

Anybody remember Duffy's? How about the bar upstairs from Duffy's? We played there a bunch during the 70's. I can't recall the name of the place. The bouncers were a tough bunch who guarded us like gold. :D
