Shoplifting charges can vary state by state. In NY where I was originally from, shoplifting is a misdemeanor. However, if challenged by a store employee or security guard and you resist, the charge is elevated to a felony.

Part of shoplifting is a compulsion. Even the rich and famous have been caught stealing petty stuff.

There was a story on the news a while back where a lady was in the pharmacy section of a local Walmart and she was hiding behind the isles and had opened some Sudafed packages or something similar and was actually cooking a batch of Meth. Think Meth users ever get so desperate they can't wait till they get home?

It seems lots of people buy stuff use it for a special occasion then bring back for a refund. Heaters in a cold snap, big TV for superbowl, all sorts of clothes, and so on.

In our local Walmart they recently went to the self check out lanes, about 12 stations. They have one clerk watch over all of them, but I understand the % of loss has gone way up as people don't scan but 1/2 the items, then go straight out the door. I will say, they will prosecute any one caught shoplifting.

Sad, but no doubt true. All I can figure out is that the increased losses must somehow justified to Walmart management by not having to pay so many checkout clerks.

I have not been to a Walmart in many many moons. The last time I went to one it was pretty bad. Don't plan on going to one any time soon.

Happens here all the time. WalMart has one of the best security systems though, their pictures are crystal clear and you can zoom in so much you can see an ingrown hair...

It is believed that 90+%, of retail “shrinkage” is due to employee theft.
Does that tell anything about the quality of the average Wal-Mart employee?

My local State Police are looking for a guy that put 4 top of the line truck tires in a shopping cart and walked out the door, past the security camera !!! "employees tried to stop him as he left the store,.....police are looking for a grey pickup". not one of those store people got his plate???

Couple years ago a guy wheeled a TV in the box up to the service desk and said he'd gotten it as a gift and wanted to return it for a gift card..... store personal showed him the video footage of him taking it from the electronics dept.

Probably 90% of my townships police activity is connected to our Walmart. The vast majority is retail theft, with most of the thieves traveling from neighboring communities. We have also had some assaults, a stabbing, and the parents who left their kids locked in the car while they went Christmas shopping. They made sure the kids were safe, they left them with a loaded 9mm pistol and some meth. Oh, and we had the two Walmart employees who tortured and killed their infant child.

I’m not a big Walmart fan, but when I go to one it’s the one 20 miles away. It’s much nicer than the one near me, and I’ve never arrested anyone there.

time to bring back some decent massage parlors, casinos and pawn shops!

My wife works at WM. There was a tiny, skinny woman that worked there at the time. Not to be disrespectful but the woman never seemed quite right but to her credit she was working. The management put her at the door as a greeter. On day a guy rushes the door with a big screen tv. The woman asks to see his receipt and is ignored and he rolls out the door. The woman chased the guy to his car and gets his plate number. For her efforts to protect the company and their property she was called to the office and fired!

They are specifically instructed not to do that. The company will absorb the small loss of the TV rather than a larger loss from a law suit because an employee, customer, or even the thief gets hurt.

Some of that doesn't make sense to us, but makes sense from a business standpoint.

That said, the whole checking receipts at the door is ridiculous. I must have an honest face because I've never been asked for my receipt at the door.

Or maybe I look like a psychopath.

Either way is okay, I guess.

My son is a patrol officer in a mid sized North Carolina City. They have shoplifting calls at their Super Wal Mart constantly all day, every day. Apparently, buried in the floor of that store is a thief magnet.
