No mention of Deep Purple?

When I was coming of age, it wasn't necessarily a band or any other kind of group that was in the spotlight. Sometimes it was, of course, but often the focus was on an individual, like Buddy Holly or Richie Valens or Little Richard or Jerry Lee Lewis. Of course, groups counted, too, like the Belmonts (as in Dion & the Belmonts), the Bellnotes, the Rock-a-Teens and the Ultratones.

Nowadays, I still like that music, but I've started listening to Jimmy Yancey, Pete Johnson, Tampa Red, Henry Gray, and Dr. John in his boogie-woogie incarnation.

Wow many great ones already mentioned ! 2 additional favorites of mine.

Warren Zevon
Ozark Mountain Daredevils

Rick
I didn't pick up on Zevon until I was stationed in Korea in '81. Another officer whom I loathed, used to constantly play a reel to reel recording of the "Excitable Boy" album in the Camp Howze O-Club. I hated that guy, but I've loved Zevon ever since. His last CD was one of his best. "Hit Somebody!" is hilarious.

A friend at Ft. Knox used to have an audio cassette of nothing but "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner", over and over. :D

All the bands mention so far Ill add Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin, Pretenders The Police, Little Feat, Muddy Waters Those were the days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mark

I'm sure I had a favorite group but I really don't remember the 60's all that well.... pretty much in a haze.

Allman Brothers
Stones
Grateful Dead
so many!!!!!!!!! and Deep Purple's "Machine Head" a classic:D
or Jethro Tull "Aqua Lung"
My goodness-makes one want to go hunt up the ol' bong ;)

Journey, first and foremost. ZZ Top a VERY close second. Def Leppard, Led Zepplin, even though they had disbanded by the Eighties. Love old country singers and bands even to this day. Waylon, Johnny Cash, Jerry Reed, all those guys.

And I thought I was the only one. They sound about as out of tune as Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi. Just awful. You have to be tone deaf to listen to it.

I never could figure what was so great about them either. Zeppelin was just so much more POWERFUL! The Beatles seemed like a Sixties version of New Kids on the Block to me.

Here is a couple more favorites of mine....

J. Geils Band
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
REO Speedwagon

spricks

The choices are surprising...No mention at all of:

Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys

That was a real BAND.. "Take me back to Tulsa?", a super hit..and many more..how soon we forget the great ones..
