Who's cookin' tonight?

A friend was dining in Alaska eating the best Halibut ever. Her being the best cook and mentor I have known in the kitchen, I would have fully expected her to speak with the Chef about that fish.

Hot Tip: The Alaskan Chef used Weber brand brown sugar seasoning. Coat the fish with the brown sugar seasoning in a plastic bag overnight in the fridge. Bake and serve over rice with favorite side dishes. (No, the fish didn't taste sweet at all).

Can't find this seasoning locally, but, I'm placing an online order in minutes!:)

At my house; if I don't cook, I don't eat!

We go to Alaska every couple of years. In a good year, we might bring home 60-100 pounds of filets. I can trade some for elk or deer from my buddies and, as there is only two of us, feed a few friends and get by for the two years in between trips. I prefer to broil with a little fresh dill from the garden (I buy dill seed at the market and strew over the garden=enough escapes the birds to make pickles and for cooking=fennel too but not as successfully).

RE earlier post: Meatballs over cooked but were good. Spaghetti and meatballs tonight. Didn't do brussels sprouts but found a good-looking recipe for tomorrow. Making pie and salsa today.

Learned to cook a little back when I was ten or so and kept adding things to the list.
Learned a lot more at the "Duck Club" where it was a all men's thing for
an early breakfast and 6pm meal for 10-18 people.

I was heavy into cooking shows like "Good eats" etc. but have slowed down but I still do a lot of smoking and BBQ when the weather is nice.

This Saturday the wife invited her son and family members over for a 5:30pm meal
and I will toss two Tri-Tip onto the Traeger for 2 hours or so, until the probe hits 133* plus a little nap time.

Do cakes and pies but never learned fresh biscuits........
probably since the first try where I got the second rise of dough all over the
rock work around the fire mantle, that was a @!%&*(~ to remove !!

Have you seen what a #14 Griswold skillet goes for these days? Especially a slant logo "ERIE" if you can find one. Collectors pay up, kind of ruined it for us cooks what like vintage cast iron. Nice setup you have, love the fire extinguisher.

I hadn't priced any for awhile. I was amazed to see what is being asked for them.

Thank you for your kind words. Browning up everything in an old cast iron skillet is part of the show I put on when competing. That's part of the fun.

I've had 3 wives. 1st one could make a sammich. 2nd had less skills. Current wife probably can cook but being "almost vegan" I ain't eating that ****. I learned to cook in my 20's. I like what I make, Dr Boombatz the cardio, not so much. Joe

Does a deli ham and Swiss cheese sandwich with chips, Oreo's and a diet Dr.Pepper count as cooking? I also do a good instant grits and oatmeal. Oh, I almost forgot, I am pretty good at micro waving Lean Cuisine and Stouffer's frozen diners.
In emergencies(pretty often) there is Braums, Burger King, Alverados, Pizza Inn, Golden Corral, Furr's, Rib Crib, Arby's, Logan' Roadhouse, Texas Roadhouse and my favorite breakfast place, Don's Alley. I can get a pretty good assortment of food cause I am no longer in the cooking business.
The only thing that this nice range has done is heat a little soup and the oven has heated some left over restaurant food. I quit cooking when my wife passed away.

Walking Jack, I "learned" to cook about the same way you did. I was a single parent for about four years and my daughter got tired of fast food places and frozen dinners. Now I do most of the cooking and all the holiday cooking. I even get rave reviews. I enjoy it when I have time.

For most of our marriage my wife did all the cooking and I never gave it much thought. And then she went through a 4 year battle against cancer and was often too sick to do any cooking and I took over with her still able to give me some guidance.

Earlier this year she passed away so it's just me and our adult son living in the house. Since he works full time and I'm retired I do all the cooking. What I make isn't fancy but we both think it's tasty. We never eat out, I cook supper every night and usually also a brunch on weekends.

During the summer I use the grill as much as possible and have learned how to grill some things that I used to cook in the oven. I think most things have a better flavor from the grill than from the oven.

It's not hard to figure out how to cook things I'm unfamiliar with since the internet has multiple entries for just about anything that I'm
unsure how to prepare.

I can't exactly say I love cooking, but I don't hate it either.

Tonight will be rosemary crusted pork tenderloin and butternut squash with butter, brown sugar and bacon. Grilled? maybe, will depend on the temperature this evening. Was 23 degrees this morning.

Rosemary and pork is a marriage made in heaven. Pork tenderloin is so versatile. Just bring your thermometer, it's easy to overcook. Yours is the third on this thread. Just looked it up and will try it next time.

Mom taught me to cook around age 12. I am very thankful she did. I do 90% of the cooking and grilling in my house. I enjoy the process and find it relaxing. I am a cook, not a chef as stated earlier but I have no complaints from the family. I also inherited my mom's 100 year old Griswold #8 dutch oven and skillets. Cast iron is the way to go.

I learned to cook at he apron strings of my grandmother, mother and aunts... have always loved cooking and createing magic in the kitchen.. the mess is just bonus...lol... I am actually taking a break from cooking a special meal for tomorrow... it is a Halloween party at my partner in Boy Scout crimes house... costume required or they dress you when you walk in... anyway... cooking was a Scout competition in our troop... so "Blood & Guts" stew is on the menu - created on a campout... Italian Sausage hot & sweet... sauteed mushrooms, onions, garlic, roasted red peppers... black olives and cherry tomatoes eyes... and marinara sauce in a slow cooker with some spaghetti worms... serve with Italian bread or toothpicks... leftovers make the best sauce over noodles.... house smells amazing

Just this morning I was complaining to my wife that I haven't had a day off since I retired 3 months ago! I used to work 9 day pay-periods with every other Friday off. So she said "take today off!" Yeah sure==Doing small things around the house: made a big batch of red sauce; a big batch of green sauce, candied walnuts, two apple pies, moved furniture and some minor stuff. Just sat down with a glass of tea to check for e-mails (4:45==started at 7:00). She did say she would pick up Mexican on the way home and for me to quarter some limes, get down the Gusano Rojo and the sal con chiles y gusano! and pick out a couple of scary movies!

I also know the open bottle is down to the last shot (with the worm!). She'll do it but doesn't really like it!
