My daughter ordered me an album for my birthday from the performers website, she was notified that it was sold out and would be delivered soon. She had no idea where it would be shipped from, turns out it came from Canada, and was left on my porch a couple of weeks ago.
So today I got an invoice from FedEx and a copy of their invoice from homeland security. HS billed them 18.44, FedEx billed me 32.69, 76% of the cost of the album.
So I guess I will have to contact the artist that made the recording to get them to pay for it because as it was explained to me the supplier pays the tariff.😳 No I’m not really that dumb.
I know I’m paying higher prices for everything, just never expected to get billed directly for it.

Tariffs are a consumption tax. Always.

So if you go to a store and buy Canadian Beer, or better yet Canadian Whiskey, like Crown Royal, is the price 76% higher?
No - that tariff on newly imported whiskey is 25% unless it meets USMCA exemptions.

Whiskey

Overview of Tariffs

The U.S. has imposed tariffs on various imports, including alcoholic beverages. Here are the key points regarding tariffs on Canadian whiskey:

  • 25% Tariff: A 25% tariff was implemented on U.S. imports of Canadian whiskey as part of retaliatory measures against U.S. tariffs.
  • USMCA Exemptions: Under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), certain alcoholic beverages, including whiskey, may qualify for tariff-free status. However, this depends on specific conditions being met.

I without doubt would tell FedEx to park their truck where the sun don't shine.......
I mean really....what can they do........
At least the OP got his package. I understand that in other cases the shipper (UPS, FedEx, Carrier Pigeons Inc) informs the recipient that they have the package and it will be delivered when the tariffs and "handling charges" have been paid.

So far the tariffs and other charges on the few things I've ordered from sources outside of the US have been paid by the shippers, though I don't expect this to continue.

I would send a note saying that president Trump said very clearly that tariffs would be paid by the exporting country and not by Americans, then ask if they are saying that he’s a liar.

Not saying this to be political, don’t want to discuss what tariffs are or aren’t, how they work, what he did or didn’t say, what he said vs what he meant, or things he has said that are truthful vs not, only saying this because the last thing any company wants to do today is risk offending the sitting president.

While I like Crown Royal, most of my whiskey comes from Kentucky. Being in a border town with 3 different bridge crossings close by there are duty free shops here. I guess now would be the time to take advantage of them. I remember back in the late 90s I could get 3 bottles of Crown for $30 at the duty free.

Good to see that tariffs are only affecting the non-essentials...like a sin tax. Albums from Canada are prominent in the list of things classified as a want, not a need.

Didn't answer the question. You said the tariff is 25%. Is the RETAIL PRICE 25% higher?

I agree for the most part. Since Jack Daniels came out with flavors, I dont buy any of the CR flavors. 'Murica

At the end of the day, the tariff is paid by whoever wants to make the sale, or purchase, the most. If the seller marks up their price to cover the tariff, the purchaser pays it. If the purchaser finds the same / alternative item without a tariff and takes their business elsewhere, then the seller will need to pay some or all of the tariff to win the business back. If the purchaser cannot find the same item without a tariff, nor an alternative that fits their needs, then the purchaser will end up paying the tariff.
