Simple math!
Greatest generation, ages 89 and older - 3 million.
Silent generation, ages 71- 88 - 26.2 million.
Boomers, ages 52 -70 - 72.9 million.
Generation X - 65.9 million.
Millennials, ages 36- 51 - 65.9 million.
Generation Z, ages18 and younger, 77.9 million. *

Age math, but seems to me, you would want your target audience to be where the money is? I understand the bias in this reporting considering the source, AARP.
There are tables from various sources for wealth per age group etc. but all seem to delve into a 'p' area which is a topic that is not discussed here.
Where is the wealth?

What? The generation that lived through the era of the cradle-to-grave job for the high school educated managed to spend it all before they died?

No. They have fallen into the trap of a material society. I don't owe anyone a dime, wife and I both work and live within our means. When I add all the bills together it's about $1200 a month, exclusive of food and fuel. Used to be TV was free over the antenna, now $200 a month. That allows me to watch Dumb and Dumber 7,000X a month. Phone was $30/ mo and the answering machine got it if'n I ain't there. Now the phone in my pocket is $160/mo but at least I can ignore you real-time. House insurance was $200/ yr until the hurricanes a dozen years ago. Now it's almost that a month. I guess we're paying for the next hurricane. Real estate taxes have held steady @ $200/mo, mainly because the house is worth half what it was new. my truck is 7 years old and my wife's car is 5, Paid around $20K for each. Replacements are double that. We've decided to fix them, both had $800 bills the same week last month. I'm working till I die, partly because of the foregoing and partly because I wander off if I ain't busy. If you come upon a dead guy pushing a row of carts at the Publix don't be alarmed. It's just me fulfilling my retirement goals. Joe

Being 2 months away from my 67th year, I find that incredible and disturbing. I wasn't debt free when I retired at 56, but my assets far outweighed my debts and I had no mortgage. In addition to that, I had put our two kids through school so they came away debt free, without incurring any debt on my end. Today, I am happy to be debt free. I don't live in a big house or have lots of land, nor do I drive luxury cars, own any yachts or a vacation home. Living within our means was always a huge priority. When we bought our house decades ago, the real estate agent told me we could afford a much larger home than we bought. I told her while she was right, I didn't want to live on PBJ sandwiches for the next 30 years, or driving unreliable clunkers. I don't feel like an exception, nor do I feel I should be, but apparently I am and that is sad. :(

AARP needs to stick to what they do best....selling insurance and keeping the post office busy.....
 
Most advertising is aimed at women. Maybe that's because, in this supposedly enlightened age, they still do most of the shopping for the kids, themselves, and hubby.
 
If you watch the documentary channels--MHC, AHC, A&E, History Channel, etc.--you must have noticed the preponderance of ads for reverse mortgages, orthopedic aids, laxatives, etc.

I watch them a lot because so little other stuff on the tube interests or doesn't irritate the crud out of me. I'm seventy-nine, and it seems clear I'm in the target demographic for those channels.

If you watch "Gangland" or other shows on Spike, you'll see lots of spots for vocational schools and, interestingly, addiction treatment centers.

It's a sleazy science, but it is one.
 
Just different...

Advertising for Boomers seems to be largely about health issues, diabetes, bladder control, pills that cure every ailment and drugs to make you young again. Since a lot of us lose health benefits, insurance is a biggy.

Nostalgic CDs, last minute investing for retirement, Vacations and Cruises, Retirement homes.

I don't mind if advertisers ignore me. Not one bit.
 
I'd better copy down that number....

If my problems continue I may have to call the people that send a supply of catheters to your house every week. I think I see them a lot on MeTV that shows a lot of old westerns. I wish I knew how they know that I'm in the age group that would need them just by watching old TV westerns from the 1950s? They must be mind readers or something. :confused::confused::confused:
 
My deceased cat get more mailed ads than me.

Twenty five years ago Mr. Fred and I moved into my current house. He started getting mail.

My deceased cat, Mr. Fred, get more mailed ads than I do.

AARP has sent him a few temporary membership cards.
I didn't realize that Mr. Fred was that old, even in cat years.
He crossed the rainbow bridge over fifteen years ago.
Obviously he has not been spending any money.
