Why buy a Compact?

Question for 9c owners, will they have a notched area in the frame where the manual safety would normally be found on a model not equipped with the safety from the factory, or would it be smooth in that area with an identical finish to the rest of the frame?

Here you go. Notch

No notch, just a hint of a square outline - like they were drawing where the cut would be made in the polymer, but decided not to cut the hole in the frame.

OK, you beat me to it! You are right in describing it as a "notch." It is not a hole though...as you can clearly see in the post. A picture says a 1000 words, huh?

So, I also see pics of 9C's with what appears to be a solid pin right in that area with possibly a directional arrow above it? No smooth "notch" and the same roll pin located to the rear. What's the difference there? I'm trying to get educated on these before I buy one.

Not sure if the smoothed "notched" area had a safety from the factory and was removed or?

That's a great question. I'm sure someone here knows the answer, but I can only speculate. My 9c is a mid-2013 model, so maybe it has something to do with the build date of the 9c. Maybe older models have the pin where the safety would be installed?

Hopefully someone will clear this up.

Thank you blue, I appreciate your input. I found one locally with the smooth notch area and I'm trying to figure out what it is before I decide to buy it. Don't want the thumb or magazine safety and not sure how to tell them apart.

The other pics of the smooth pin really have me confused.

Mine is a December 2012 build I picked up a few weeks ago for 425 brand new. I already has a FS 9 and a Shield 9. Wasn't actively looking but couldn't pass up at that price

Well the 9c is currently the one that goes on every range trip and gets shot more than any other gun I own. Super comfortable to shoot and I'm more accurate with it than either my FS or Shield

Had both out tonight with my SR1911 Commander

trophyhunter, If you want to make sure it doesn't have the mag release safety see if the shop will let you dry fire it, and try to dry fire it with the mag out.

I know that mine has the square "notch" (no pin or hole), and it is a standard 9c (no safety, no mag safety...the way an M&P should be!);)

Just found this....apparently, if you have the pin with the arrows you CANNOT install a thumb safety on the M&P.

Thanks again Blue! Well, it looks like the "notched" appearance is the one I'm looking for so I'll take a closer look at that one tomorrow.

Now to see what that pin is, and why the difference? I'm still searching threads for that information.

On Edit: The models with what appeared to be a pin with an arrow above it are actually a plugged hole where you would access the "keyhole" on a pistol with an internal lock.

I had been chomping at the bit for the CA approved shield to show up but, after reading numerous threads about issues with the shield and people having to send them back for repair I bought a 40c. My wife has one. It really isn't hard to conceal and it's easier to control than the shield in .40 S&W.

Uechik

No problems with my Shield 9 after 2 k rounds.

Zero failures even when I limp wrist.

If it has a "notch" that is a frame plug, meaning TS can be added but is not in place. No TS option has a clean frame, only TDL and Slide stop. The little circle with the arrow is for an internal lock that would operate with a key.

1st picture no option for TS but with lock option, not installed
2nd picture w/TS
3rd picture, plug in place TS can be added or has been removed. Hence the plug.

You can remove TS and not install plug, just leaves a void.

Hope this clears this up.

Of all my M&P's, I used to say the 9c would be the last I would give up....

The Shield is a nice second gun, but not as versatile as the compact. It carries well, but shoots a bit harder, has a safety, and feels a bit small in my hands.

My thoughts have changed over the last year and I may now say the 45c is my favorite M&P. ;)

Thanks ginzo! Great info.

I'm still a .40 guy, but a friend just bought a 9mm shield, so when I try it.........I might have to buy another gun?:)

Your welcome, if this is not correct, don't worry, someone will come along and fine tune it. I believe other than the sear block, it is straight forward. Generally M&P's with the TS option have the correct sear block in them already. They used to be different, but may be all standard now. I would have to research. I am in the process of removing the TS from both my guns, waiting on plugs to arrive.

Thanks ginzo! Great info.

I have a FS9 and 9C. Of the 2, my 9C sees more range time. It's my 2nd favorite pistol just slighty behind my Sig.

You can tell if it has the mag safety without dry firing. One way is the SKU but who can remember all of them.

The other is to drop the mag and look in the mag well. Maybe they'll let you lock the slide back. You'll see the arm sticking out into the well.

The one on the right is the mag safety arm. The one on the left is the ejector. You can see the sear disconnect in the middle.

I've got both the FS 40 & 40C. Love them both. So far they fit well in all the same holsters that I have. I can conceal the 40C a bit easier but I have no problems with that regardless which one I'm carrying at the time. I have a few spare FS mags which I've equipped with X-grips & carry the compact with them occasionally. Then it feels almost identical to the FS. I think I shoot a bit better with the 40C. If the flat base plate bothers you & you feel that your grip isn't as good S&W will send you one with the pinky extension which I prefer. I got three mags with mine & two came with the extension. I gave S&W an e mail & they sent me two extensions free of charge so I have a spare in case I buy another compact mag without the extension.

To answer the OPs basic question. So your other M&PS aren't missing a family member 😁
