Why do I need more than one 30 rnd magazine?

I'm sure some people will consider it a stupid question. But I had to ask. Yes I understand the likelihood of them being banned and no longer available. I just don't know why I need to have 2 dozen of them. I'm not criticizing those people who want more of them. I'm just not sure I get it. I've never had a non-AR gun that I had more than 2 magazines for and I've never felt lacking. Am I wrong in thinking that a P-mag should last a LONG time?

My friend you dont seem to come visit very often but when you do you ask very good questions. I didnt order any more mags because I came to the conclusion that I had more than enough for a couple of lifetimes. Even if the men in black come to confiscate my guns (heaven forbid) and it turns into a nasty situation, I would not have the opportunity to go through the ones I have. I like taking at least 6 mags when I take my nephews or friends Pdog hunting just because sometimes they may bo through more than I have, but they are generally 20's that I take for that situation. When I go by myself I may take a mixture of all the sizes I have just because I can figure out what bullet is working best that day but that is just me and I could do the same thing if all I had were 10's

You need more than two mags because you can own more than two mags.

Me, I train to let the magazine hit the ground when it's empty in all my reload drills, whether long gun or handgun.
It can take a toll on them.

Because you might need more rounds?
Can't think of any time where someone ever said they had too much ammo during a shooting situation.

Because being prepared means never having to wait on the UPS truck to finish the mission.

When we go to the farm to shoot AR's we might put a few hundred or a few thousand rounds downrange in an afternoon. Our shooting could best be described plinking.

if you plan to shoot a lot then you will want to have a bunch of mags topped off before you go so you don't spend what little range time you have stuffing your one or two magazines with ammo. I can waste time stuffing mags while I'm sitting on the couch watching TV.

I think i have 4 or 5 mags for each AR...and about the same number of mags for my semi-auto pistols.

I load all my mags before I go to the range.

That the reason I have more than one.

Many people are ordering them now because (A) they don't have enough, (B) the government is looking to ban them so you'll never be able to buy another one at these prices again, (C) profit motive as you can sell the banned items at a higher price later...

There are lots of different reasons people are buying them...but the driver of the recent panic is government intrusion in peoples lives.

Nobody trusts crooked bureaucrats to make intelligent decisions...and I don't blame them.

Under standard situations, two magazines is plenty. But they are easily misplaced, less easily bent or broken, and then you have a really cool-looking single shot .223 (been there, done that). If you are looking at $100 for 3-5 spares it seems to be inexpensive insurance, kind of like having essential spare parts for anything that may go out of production or be unavailable for some other reason in the future.

You only shoot 30 rounds at the range? You are atypical for an AR owner.
I usually go through 150-300 rounds, and I want my ammo loaded up before I go. So, while appreciate your position, I would resent your presumption that my needs should be regulated by it.

And, of course, if god-forbid you ever needed your AR for defense of yourself, family or community, I'm betting you wouldn't feel as you do now. Just look at the LA riots, Katrina aftermath, etc. I am sure that many of the victims didn't think it could happen to them until it did.

Oh yeah...I also have about 50 moon clips for my 45 acp revolver. I preload those too prior to going to the range.

Simple- because Murphy strikes & having spares for broken, lost mags is smart- or else you have a slow cumbersome single shot.

I have multiple mags for my weapons, only because I shoot USPSA & IDPA & I use them/ abuse them. Nice to have spares.

But for each their own.

Okay, lots of reasonable replies. Most of you guys are out of my league when it comes to rounds put down range. One of the reasons I asked is I was wondering if I should join the craze. If I was missing something. All that I have are p-mags. I was curious if they had durability issues. I have 40+ years experience with firearms, but my AR experience is minimal. My military friends tell me that some of the old metal mags were almost a one time use item. My impression is the P-mags are more durable. Maybe it doesn't matter at this stage of the game as they have been come like hen's teeth in the last 48 hours. Anyhow, thanks to the people who took the time to politely reply.

For AR sport shooting, it's the convenience of loading up 4 30 rounders before you head to the range.

Less time spent loading = more time to shoot

For me, it's about evenly balanced between actually needing a bunch of mags to get through a 2-gun match and preserving the right and ability to own them after VP Biden gets done with his committee.

If you ever shoot High Power Rifle matches you'll need more than one.
The sitting and prone stages use two each and having a few extra in case
of malfunction, loss, etc is a good idea.

Three gun matches can also require mag changes.

I haven't shot a match in over a year but the bug could bite again at
any time. Used to shoot one or another almost every weekend in the summer back
in the day.

To the OP: Because once we allow that any arbitrary number of cartridges in a magazine is "wrong" or "bad", it is easier to say that, for example, 10 rounds is also "bad", why not just 5?

Life's too short to worry about what others perceptions are of needs versus wants. This is still a free country. I may not need a car that'll do 150 mph either. Who's to set that limit? The market, you, or the feds?

To the OP: Basically you only need to have the amount of magazines that you feel comfortable with having. If you are like me and take good care of your equipment, two maybe all that you need and would last you a lifetime. Me personally, If 2 was my total, I would get two more as backup just in case one breaks or whatever. It always better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

The range I shoot at has 15-minute shooting periods followed by a cease fire for target changes. I like to have enough mags so that I don't waste any of my precious 15 minutes loading them on the firing line.

That said, I just ordered 5 more 10-round mags from 44mag.com.
