Why do you own an M&P15?

I've been looking into purchasing my first AR and liked the M&P15 platform. For my first AR rifle I'd like a completed package. As I get more comfortable with its parts I will build my own. Curiosity struck me, why do you guys own an AR and why is it an M&P15? I'll be using mine mainly for target practice, but I also like the ability to use it for home defense if the need ever came. Thanks for the input.

It is a great gun! I have 2. One for me and one for my wife. we do alot of target shooting. For home defense we have .40cal jhp pistols at each end of the house.

A sport rifle for home defense is rather large to move in tight spaces, and the small hi powered .223 bullet can travel along way.

We just want home defense not neighborhood defense, well not yet at least. we will see.

Any solid point round can overpenetrate. Just use winchester defenders in your ar15 and problem solved...oh, and you got 30 rounds of devestation instead of 9.

I own several AR's because I can.

The mere sight of one causes liberals to have paroxysmal spasms and make unintelligible noises that other liberals mistakenly interpret to be intelligent thought.

Actually, my wife and I both own a carbine because they are fun to shoot. I own a dedicated National Match rifle because they are the preferred rifle for that game if winning is the object. I also own a RRA 6.8SPC that I hunt deer with. I put the 6.8 together a few years ago after I had back surgery and needed a deer-worthy caliber that didn't kick much.

The carbines are both Smiths because I have always favored S&W firearms.

I bought a M&P a few days ago. I had a choice between it and a brand I didn't recognize that was $100 cheaper. Neither were cheap. I bought it because I've always sort of kind of wanted an AR and it may be that I can't buy one I the near future. Reason for owning: just to have one. Especially if someone in the govt tells me I can't.

I already owned a Colt. In January there were AWB bills brought onto the floor in Illinois. I wanted another AR before the possibility of a AWB became law. Went to an LGS, and they had a S&W15OR for $1100. This was pretty reasonable given the prices I was hearing elsewhere so I bought it on the spot. And now you know the rest of the story...

Target shooting, coyotes, other varmints, zombies, and because I can. I like S&W because of the service.

I was in the Corps and I like the AR style rifles, they are simple to break down, clean and repair if needed and I chose S &W not once but three times for my AR's as I was impressed with the accuracy, durability and price of each and every one of my 15's. Right now I have the M & P 15-22, M & P 15 sport in 5.56 and my latest is the M & P 15, 300 blackout and each rifle has shot great out of the box.

Folks, we have a winner here! This is the exact reason why I bought my first ones back in the early 90's. I suspect this is also the reason most people are buying today as well. When you think about it, the current shortages says something about the design of the AR15. People that do not shoot or have little shooting experience are buying these guns, mags and ammo simply because of the AR reputation. They figure if the gun is good enough for the Federal government to supply for our troops then it should be good enough for the civilians. I personally own AR's made by three different companies and I honestly prefer the S&W over my Bushmaster. One reason is the reputation for service. Not that there is anything wrong with my bushmaster, it is just my individual preference. And NO my Bushmaster is not for sale either.:p I also own my AR's as form of investment as well as something to hand down to my son and his future family.:)

Because it is my DUTY as a US citizen to be able to defend the Constitution against ALL enemies, foreign AND Domestic.

And because I know from experience that I can rely on the M&P15 as a formidable tool to accomplish that task.

And two more great reasons! You would think that the government and the anti-gunners out there would be glad that us gun owners have these weapons just for the above listed reasons. Lets face it, most countries know that if they were to try and invade our country, the civilian population alone would mount an extremely good defense against ground troops.

It helps that the mere sight of one causes liberals to have paroxysmal spasms and make unintelligible noises that other liberals mistakenly interpret to be intelligent thought.

I bought mine in December because I had the feeling that they were going to get hard to get. In January I named mine Piers Morgan and just the thought that my owning something would give a certain segment of our society "paroxysmal spasms" makes me sleep so sound at night.

Truthfully?

I never really wanted one until this hype started. Then I found two new ones at a deal I couldn't pass up. I sold one for more than the two cost total!!! :D

So I got my M&P free. Can't beat that price. M&P AR-15A with the Troy combat sights....

I actually had an AR-15 in the army, which is kind of rare I found out. I went through basic with the M-16 but was issued an AR-15 when I got out. Fully automatic of course. I never really knew the difference until I was telling my brother 25 years later that I had one and he argued with me.

I guess Armalite always called it an AR-15 and Colt called it the M-16. Armalite made quite a few before selling the rights to Colt. Or something like that.

Anyway, it's good to get an AR back in my mitts. Now if I could find ammo to shoot it. :(

I did just about the same, I had a break in and they got one of my M&P15's. Now out here the prices were beginning to skyrocket to where they are now. A few days after Xmas I found another one with a gas piston for $1125! I bought it from one of the last really good honest gunsmiths in my area. Bolsa Gunsmithing in Westminster, CA.

Late last Summer I'd begun thinking about getting back into competition shooting, and decided I needed an AR. I started doing my research, and the M&P15 was among my top choices as a good "base" gun to start with.

I had intended to wait until Spring to buy, with the hope that after all the 12/21/2012 craziness had passed, prices might come down further, but then came the even crazier situation in December. As I watched the situation develop, it felt like my hand was being forced into buying then, while they were available, and before prices had a chance to go higher. I really HATE being forced into doing anything like this.

My absolute top choice would have had to have been ordered, with no assurance of getting it, but there were actually two M&P15ORs still in the box at my local dealer, which was the S&W model I wanted. I was just in time, as the rest of the AR15s were taken while I waited for the required background checks to go through, and the AR-style 22s were also going fast. I also grabbed one of the last two 30-rnd magazines on the rack.

Also while I waited, I ended up answering questions from a number of first-time buyers for both rifles and handguns, offering suggestions once I knew the "what and why" they were looking. I was also urging the newbies to get some proper training, even if they weren't looking to get their CPL. Hopefully that did some good. ;)
