Why doesn't the 686 get more press?

Probably because they (L frames) are pretty much the same. They haven't been around as long as the K/N frames which, over time, were made in multiple configurations and styles. The L frame is what it is, a bull strong .357 Magnum. It only suffers from lack of cache'!

Ralph

It looks like a double barrel over & under pistol. There is no graceful lines or design. People talk about the Ruger being blockish the Glock no nothing just a hunk of black plastic. That's exactly what I see in an L frame. You asked the question, "Why doesn't the 686 get more press?" that's my answer. Evidently, you don't like or appreciate my response. Oh well...

Unlike those antiquated pencil barrel revolvers that look like pea shooters!

Who says I don't like or appreciate your response? I like a spirited discussion, you put out your position and I was just curious to hear your reasoning. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. If you don't like 686s, I'm certainly not going to change your mind. Just wanted to hear the position of the haters. Thanks.

+1

I have never, ever liked the look of full underlugs no matter who makes them. And Ruger's GP100 is the ugliest of them all.

I like to shoot L frames. I think they are as ugly as a mud fence, and handle about as gracefully as a hog on ice. I understand, and applaud, the reasoning behind the engineering. I juswt much prefer K frames, is all.

Rather than compare them to a GLOCK, I like to compare them to a Chevy 350 engine.

There are a ton of them around and they work well for almost every purpose. Good power in a good size.

Sure, they aren't like having the perfectly bored and stroked 327 or the brute torque of a big block 396 or 454 but the 350 gets 'er done in just about every model Chevy.

So goes the L-frame S&W.

Hey everyone, just be happy everyone likes something differen, Or We all would be stuck with a colt. Dang , did I say that, need to go to bed

I was in the gun store at the range one day, showed them my 686-1. I was thinking of selling it to my nephew, thinking I might get it back someday. I asked them what they thought it was worth to sell to him. They said 300 bucks, decided to keep her. Here it is:

Yeah, he'll give you $300 for it, then turn around and want $500. I hate being insulted by gun dealers who think you're stupid...

Gun dealers are just that, dealers, in the business of making a living (they pay the store's rent, its utilities, for the FFL, putting up with the ATF and the bookwork and a myriad of other downside costs such as liability insurance and insurance on their stock).

Offering $300 and selling for $450 or even $500 is just business.

And nobody has to play the game.

Pistol Toter, you may have something here. I never cared for the front heavy L-Frame guns but thought it was only the balance (or lack thereof). Their appearance does have sort of a Glockishness about it.

I ought to get at least one L-Frame though. I'd like a Model 581 or Model 681 4-inch.

Hey, they're good guns guys. I carry a Ruger SP101 and The Glock BRICK model 21. Both are uglier than... well shall we say, "they would make a freight train take a dirt road." I tell you something else that I think hurt the "L" frame and that being the big push towards semi-automatics and probably S&W was heavily marketing their auto offerings instead of the "L's." Those who wantrd the 686/586 bought them regardless. I bought the only one I have because it was pristine and unusual. But, I still say they are not a sight to behold when compared to the "K" frame or the "N".

I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT I HAVE 3 686'S AND 3 586'S AND LOVE THEM TO DEATH. YES, I ALSO HAVE SEMI AUTO'S BUT I ONLY RELOAD FOR MY REVOLVERS BECAUSE I SHOOT THEM THE MOST AND SHOOT THEM EQUALLY OR ELSE THE OTHER ONES WILL GET JEALOUS.

Speaking as a long-time 4" Python fan, the 4" 686 is what gawd had in mind when she invented shot & shell....

Well, I went and put night sights on it, and it's my bedside buddy and travel gun now. Plus the fact that it doesn't have that blasted lock . . . sure makes it hard to let go of it!
