I had a conversation with someone that lives near me in SC. We discussed a gun. He drove over to a nearby shopping center, I gave him some money, he gave me a gun.

This is the way things should be, but it could have never happened in NY. One of the happiest views I have is when I see NY in my rear view mirror.

Let's clarify a bit, though...

What you just described is entirely legal with long guns.

Handguns, no - that involves letting the state know it's changing hands. Of course, PA requires you to do FTF at an FFL also ... so NY isn't alone in weird gun laws.

Good thing you're not a mentally disturbed felon.

SOME parts of NY state it is pretty much that easy.... for now......

The ccw permit law in NY is the same for the entire state... leave NY city out of any rational discussion.... But individual counties can vary as to how the gun is placed on a permit. that is dictated by the judges within a given county, and of course that changes every few years depending on elections.

In most counties, you go to the store, or individual, buy the gun, get a receipt, BUT cannot take the gun (handguns only....) until you go to the pistol permit office in the county with the receipt and have it put on your permit. The permit office issues a coupon to take to the store, or individual, to pick up you handgun. This can all be done within a small amount of time, which is basically the drive time back and forth. Some counties< mine< give you a coupon to have with you and you just buy gun, give them coupon, take gun home, but before you use or carry it, you must go to permit office to have it put on your permit.

As far as handguns go, I'd rather go thru an FFL. Call me paranoid if you wish, but I want to know that the gun has been sanitized or cleansed since I took possession. Getting handed a gun that has been possibly used in a homicide does not make me feel warm and fuzzy.

Got palmetto bugs??

Get a signed dated recipe/Bill of Sale from a guy with ID when you buy it; end of THAT issue....

RE:

check the laws west of Pokeepsie/Hackensack or whatever those places are....much of the rest of the US has other ideas....

My nephew made up a phony SC drivers license, he goes to school at Univ of S.Carolina. Couldn't tell the difference between the two, except he was 2 years older with the fake one. Computers do some amazing things.
ID's are faked all the time.

I think I know where you are coming from with your replies, but they do bring up overtones of a belief in Govt. gun control. The things you mention about your nephew is nothing, if he can pull it off for possibly a beer how do we keep the criminal from getting guns. I prefer to leave the laws alone or make it easier for the law abiding citizen.

I moved from LI NY and getting a handgun in a private transaction is a real pain, I would much rather have it this way. If you feel that you would rather go through and FFL that is fine because down here you can if you want to. It is all about choice. Down here you have a choice up there you don't.

A lot of people move to new states and complain because they don't like the way things are done there, but I love it here and am happy not to have the govermint (misspelled on purpose) sticking their nose in my private business.

In what I guess is 80% to 90% of the country that is the way it is done every day, it's the restrictive anti-gun states that want to control our lives.

The transaction that took place is legal in most of the country but the antis want you to believe it should not be allowed. If the same transaction took place at a gun show the anti gun people would call it the gun show loop hole.

Thank God I now live in a free state.

Have never lived in NY and never will. I have never even been to NY.

People have no choice where they were born, I stayed longer than I wanted to due to the fact I became a cop in NY and loved the job. After I retired I stuck it out a lot longer than I wanted to due to family obligations, but than God I got out. I just went back for Easter and hated it. Down here I was walking around in shorts, up there I froze my butt off. I had thought of visiting a couple times a year but I made a commitment to go back in Aug and after that it will be once a year

I lived in NY until 1995, haven't missed it for a moment !!! 10 years in the Vegas area, now in SC and loving it. Nice seeing you today Silver

I am looking forward to going to the range tomorrow

We all know how some here don't like NY, but do we need to hear it every other day? Gets a little old.
I'm quite happy with life and don't need a specific location to feel "free". My freedom comes from God Himself.
Talk away if you like and makes you "free".

I've been to NYC a couple of times, you can keep it. Cold, snow, rusty cars and crazy gun laws, nope, don't need it.

I've been there and done that. A beautiful and cold state. If I never have to return, that's fine with me. Actually, when I was there, I was pulling a 53' trailer...not a lot of room for error.

New York is a beautiful state, it is a shame the politicians screwed it up. The gun laws were always bad but I didn't realize how bad they were till I got older. The further away you get from NY city the better it gets and the better the gun laws are. Unfortunately much of the political power in NY resides in NY city and the NY mayor is one of the biggest gun hater politicians. NY is still a beautiful state but the liberals had made it unaffordable. I just read a report that compares taxes in different areas and NY has the worlds highest taxes. NY has turned into a welfare state and the working people are heavily take to provide a free ride for the freeloaders. Once people learn that they can vote for people that will provide with everything for free it is hard for anyone to run against a candidate that will buy votes with your hard earned money. MY NY house was on 1/3 of an acre and was somewhere around 1,500 or 1,800 square feet the takes were $7,000 a year which are considered cheap, taxes $10,000 to $15,000 a year isn't unusual. My SC house is over double the size of the NY house and is on 1 1/2 acres the taxes are about 1/2 of NYs.

I will never say NY isn't beautiful it is the politicians that mucked it up. The best thing that can happen to NY is to have the over crowded southern part split from the north. Once you get about 30 or 40 miles north of the city it becomes a whole different state.

Was in Sag Harbor fall 07 and it was beautiful. Kinda neat seein' how de rich folk live

Silver-Out behind the Courthouse is where I do a lot of my transactions-Trunk to trunk-usually we get a couple of deputies stop to see what's being traded/bought. One time I was selling a 20 ga sxs quail gun to another lawyer and there must have been 4-5 deputies coming over to check out the shotgun.
