Why I don't Open Carry

The reasons I open carry are simple, because I can, because I want to and because its legal in my state. Exercise your rights people or lose them, there is nothing to be skeered of, it just a gun in a holster. I open carry almost every day without incident.

...[snip]...
So if you're against open carry because you don't want a "hassle" with the police, carry openly enough to affect change. The change will benefit your concealed carry too.

I agree with both of these! I have been OCing for the past couple months. My CHP is in the works and should be in hand by the end of June. Until then, I OC almost daily. After, I'll probably OC and CC -- whatever fits the situation & my daily tasks.

I've encountered several LEO's in my daily travels. Some seem indifferent. Some take a gander at my .45. A few have given me a slight stare down. One cruised me at a gas station yesterday. NONE have questioned me or even said anything other than chit-chat, which is not unusual where I live. My reaction in ALL cases? Smile, make eye contact, say hello and walk on.

Most regular citizens' reactions I've noticed - a few stare; most notice, make eye contact, smile and walk on -- same as I do. A couple have insisted I go in line at the grocery store or fast food place ahead of them.
One over zealous bank manager called LEO's. They told him I was within my rights based on his signage. LEO never even spoke to me.

And, a couple people have asked me if I was a LEO. I smiled, answered, "No" and finished my business.

All non-issue's.

Found this guy at the Costco, Colorado Springs. On the other side of his holster he had two magazines and handcuffs.

The checker was friendly with him so I inquired. He told me his face was heavily tattooed and that he has been tackled often in the store by the police.

He made me think of an old "Far Side".

When I worked in a gas station (the owner grew up with my dad)
He was in business for 50years when the roads were dirt. He had a fellow gas station owner who was on the other side of town and was tired of being robbed. He carried a gun iwb everybody seen it.
To me this is why he met his death. He had a bullseye on him with a sign you gotta kill me. And they did the next time he was robbed. Sad story he was a nice guy too.

Open carry is like showing your poker hand in five card draw before the last bet, you lose.

Please keep it a ccw carry. The element of surprise can give you an edge. I pity the fool.

In the gas station were I worked there was many ccw carries there. Two 44mags, 357mag and 38 special there on any given night. It was the wrong place to rob.
I explained to the owner given them what they want be nice. If they start shooting as they leave kiss the cement floor the Calvary will open up.

Uh Oh ! Now what do we do ? If we take the right, what's he doing with the left ? If we take the left one, what's he doing with the right one ? If we mess this up what's he gonna be doing with both of them ?

I don't think I would ever open carry unless I was doing an outoor, nature type activity. Even then it's a maybe. I don't even conceal carry, but maybe ill change my mind about that. I don't really have a holster anyways.

The only time I ever objected to open carry was when I was in my local grocery store and saw some gentleman with what looked like a M65 in an Uncle Mike's cordura holster and thought to myself: "Man, that K-frame deserves a much nicer holster." :D

I've said it many times before. Open carry does not bother me. I think society as a whole needs to stop viewing firearms ownership as something aberrant, and responsible open carry done properly in jurisdictions where it is legal is one of many ways to accomplish that. In that respect, I'm all for it, especially if it promotes positive discussion.

Lunatics like Kory Watkins do not represent OCers as a whole. We don't like it when the antis take the worst possible examples of our numbers and use them to represent all gun owners. Why do some of us do the same exact thing from within?

All the Monday Morning Quarterbacking does not change the fact that open carry is legal in many jurisdictions. If you privately disagree with it, that's your right. Heck, lots of things that are now commonplace had very slow public acceptance at first. Actively opposing it through word or deed, however, places us on the same footing as those who view the RKBA as a "privilege" that should be so tightly regulated as to be practically impossible for all but a select few (read: the moneyed elite).

This probably won't be the last time I'll contribute my two cents. Open carry threads seem to be a perennial favorite around here. ;)

Yes, I'd like to see folks wearing nice holsters as well...

Ugly holsters need to be concealed....IMHO

For those that choose to open carry from time to time.

Get yourself something nice to wear. ;):D

Double like! :) :)

The debate for Open Carry versus Concealed Carry will be decided by folks way above my grade. I practice Common Sense Carry. Think about that concept. Carry well my friends. Stay armed.

In Kansas, OC has been legal for anyone over 18 years old since 1861. I have never really thought about it tactically or if I may or may not spook the sheep. I put my gun on each day, throw a shirt on and if it is concealed so be it. If it is half hanging out, so be it. Come July 1, permitless CC becomes legal. Even though I've had my permit for CC since day one I just don't worry about it. As far as LEO in Kansas. Heck half of them go out of their way to talk to you about what you are carrying and talk about your holster. More times than not, they always comment to me that they wish their department would let them have my type of holster or my type of gun. Met a lot of really neat cops over the years.

Like the post above....

Most young guys that have been issued a glock from day one,
are purty curious at the mere sight of a double action revolver, or 1911 pistol.

Maybe envy would better describe the look on their faces.

If my jacket rides up over my sidearm....Non event as far as I am concerned.....

Open carry or concealed, it's all good in my book.
