Because our high school band just brought back their 19th consecutive uil sweepstakes trophy. That's highest rating in marching, contest, and sightreading.

I can't teach them math like I give them them the music and teamwork and goal setting skills they need.

Because we have to learn how to be excellent human beings, and this is how I can do that.

I'm so, so proud of them, and so amazingly happy to be here.

(it's not perfect here, but the view of the scissor tailed flycatcher by the lakeshore yesterday makes me forget it isn't )

No video taken at contest. But I'll see if I can find something that doesn't violate privacy protocols.

I am happy for you. Music shaped my life as well so I know the feeling. Who would have thought that a kid from England, after seeing The Beatles on Ed Sullivan in '64, would raise a family and have a successful career all because of a chunk of wood with wire on it.

Every one of your kids takes you with them after they leave.

Feels good huh?

I want to see the picture of the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher.... They are rare in these parts. One here in '97 and a Fork-tailed in '00, real scarce.
e.

I did not get a picture. I was on a road on the dam where no stopping allowed.

Before I'd only seen pictures. It was lovely.

UIL??

My 4 kids went to a small Christian school. It was the best in the county for Science, Math, and English. It didn't have a Football team so no Marching band. I really feel my kids missed something! They were all in concert band (which stunk), but the feeling of marching a half-time show, riding home on the band bus after a championship football win, or winning a high score in you bands division at a marching contest, Those are sensations my kids will never know (maybe the grandkids will get to) but I think their lives are less fulfilled for missing them. Ivan (former first chair Tuba, class of "74)

Uil, university scholastic league, pretty much the end all be all to all school competitions, including athletics, academics, and fine arts in Texas.

Thanks, that competition went by a different name here.

Congratulations to you and your students.

Don't you agree the scissor tailed fly catcher tastes more like chicken than a spotted owl?

Cap, don't sell yourself short. I have no talent for music and I mean no talent. I have trouble drumming my fingers in proper time and you don't want to be within 50 miles of me if I try to sing.

You TEACH music. You have my greatest admiration for what that's worth. I once had a young musician tell me that writing music was easy, only certain notes could follow certain notes. HAH! If it was that easy everyone on the planet would be making millions as song writers. You have a talent given to only a few. How many math teachers can teach music? Answer that and you'll get some idea of your importance to your students.

Rant over. Smile, you'll make people wonder if you're that happy or just nuts.

I'm an ex-math teacher and regret not taking advantage of the offer from my mom, who was an accomplished pianist, to teach me to play. There were just too many trees to climb at the time. Math feeds the brain...music feeds the soul.
