Why is the 10-14 so unpopular?

Well if anybody on this site does not like their 10-14 then ship the revolver to me and I will pay the shipping and all the fees.
I bought new three years ago a 10-14 on Gunbroker for $334 out the door in California. Its among my most accurate revolvers and my home defense weapon. Its not as pretty as my older model 10s but its as good a shooter as any of them.

The last time I saw one locally the price was $769 (new). Way too much money when good, older used ones (with no locks) regularly turn up for around $300. For a few dollars more I would rather buy a 686 or 686+ and have the option to shoot magnums. YMMV

Well I would not paid $769 for a 10-14. But I would not pay say $775 to $800 for a new 686 or 686+. Smith and Wesson has priced themself out of the market on a lot of their revolvers. I would much rather shoot my 686-2 4 inch which I paid $400 out the door for. The 10-14 is not the only revolver S&W has priced out of reach.

Personally I could never get past the internal lock. Not to start another "lock - no lock" thread, but just answering the question the OP posted; my feeling is that there are a LOT of consumers that will simply NOT purchase a new Smith with the lock (yes I am one of them) NO MATTER how pretty the gun looks.

ESPECIALLY since there are still many fine copies of most of their older revolvers still available and at the same or less than the new ones cost. To me, it's just a no brainer!

Rumor has it that Colt is going to bring back a stainless version of their Dick Special - don't know the specifics yet, but if they come out with the DS ll or their Carry Magnum as it was with NO LOCKS, I think they will carve Smith a new one! Who knows...... maybe it will FORCE Smith to loose the lock as a competitive issue. I sure hope so.......

I don't know where this $775 number is coming from, but I have seen them NIB for $500 or so.

I got one used for $200, they're out there.

I agree, especially when I can find new Ruger GP100s for $520. I'm sure prices vary by locale because the only used model 10s I've ever seen for under $250 were in pretty bad shape, both cosmetically and mechanically.
