Why isn't there a S&W defensive shotgun?

A lot of the public ranges around here won't even allow a shotgun on the line... too much wear-and-tear on target backers, and they don't have the "run-and-gun" steel setups, which would account for the lack of sightings. (There is an exception for slugs, just before deer season, in most cases.) I know of a bunch of people that utilize the local skeet/trap ranges and switch out barrels just to get trigger-time with their defensive shotguns.

In any case, as you say, just about everyone and their dog has a defensive shotgun leaning in the corner of the bedroom, close at hand. I have a few myself, a beater 870 painted in flat-black epoxy, set up with an old OD GI sling. I set aside the 28" full-choke barrel and acquired a bent barrel from a gunshop owner friend for $20 and chopped it to 18 1/2". It's the one that sees the most duty as home defense, vermin control and also for hunting rabbit/grouse/woodcock. A few others include a chopped Rem. 48 (It's a real brute!), Rem. 58 and a Stoeger O/U Double Defense 20 ga. for my Co-Pilot. I have no problem with range time, as I live out in the sticks... just a few steps out the back door and... VOILA!

The way things are going in this world, I'm fairly certain that there are a lot more people than you realize who are buying SD/HD shotguns, or modifying sporting versions for the express purpose of self defense. I equate it to concealed carry handguns: They are to be seen only when the need arises.

Our indoor ranges allow just about every type of round. From 22 to 50BMG....if you feel like shooting the 50 at 25 yards. No problems with bimetal ammo either.

My pal Ken Hackathorn set up a double feed on a 3000 one time on the range to show what great guns they were. He showed us that if you had a hard surface, like the ground, you could take it and SLAM the butt on the ground while pushing on the slide and that darned thing would clear itself, everytime. Kinda rough on the equipment but when things are bad you gotta get going. He once said he could vouch for the fact that a 6 foot 3 inch 200+ pounder could completely hide himself behind the curb on a street. Amazing what you can do with **** flying in your direction. S&W 3000, I think I'll find another.

S&W tried their hand at Shotguns about 35 years ago and failed. Between the Remington 870, the Mossberg 500, the Ithaca 37 and the Winchester 1200 & 1300 they have the market pretty much sewn up. Aside from that, they are having trouble producing Hand Guns of consistent quality now, they certainly do NOT need further distractions!

How about one of those Rossi circuits that doesn't suck? Chamber it in 9mm and 357, throw a houge stock and a picatinny rail and watch em sell like crazy.
