Why Model 27's are the coolest S&W's

The gunniest gun I ever saw is a 3.5 inch model 27 with a nickel finish. Nothing looks more .....I trying to think of a word that fits and can't think of one.

The second gunniest gun is the 2.5 in model 19. I just think those very short shrouded barrels have the most business like look of any firearm. Bar none.

Here's a detail of the checkering.

Maybe my all time favorite:

Only N Frame I ever owned was a Model 28 I was given for doing some work; I traded it out right away. The 28 is nowhere near the finish of the 27. My only .357 is a Model 19

. My question is: Is the Pre-27 comparable to the Python, or was it a competitor to the Shooting Master?

Yes, 27's are COOL, but what can a 27 do that my 28 can't do?
Sure, it is missing some of the bling, but ALL of the function is there!
My 28 no dash 6 incher, is mighty nice. Maybe if I had a 27, I'd agree. Regardless enjoy your 27, they are a fine sought after Smith. Bob

The 27 has long been my favorite revolver with the 5" being my personal preference for the best one.

The Model 27 is my favorite Smith. And I also think the 5" M27 is the absolute best in balance and eye appeal. Here's another pic for a great thread.

I'll let you know what I think of the 27 in a week. Just bought an S-prefix 5" one this morning - my first 27. I pick it up next week, when I can get some time off from work.

And now let me ask - what's the importance of the S-prefix? Apparently it's sort of a big deal, but I can't find anything to tell me why.

Model 627

To the OP:

There is one other gun with a checkered topstrap, the stainless steel Model 627 and 627-0 of the 1980s.
