Why own a Model 24?

In regard to the shortage of Model 24’s compared to Model 29’s does any body know a smith that can replace the barrel and cylinder on a 29 with a tappered Model 24 .44 special barrel and .44 cylinder and how much that would cost. Is this a mistake in changing a 29 like this.
Thanks
Jeff

Sure, that's a piece of cake. But do you have a barrel and cyl? You may find it harder to come up with them than a Mod 24.

We see Mod 24s change hands regularly. Just go on "the hunt". You'll find what you want.

There is a never fired still in grease and box Model 24-3 blued with 4” barrel on Gun Broker at $1500 to $1600. Is this a fair price. Is it a shame to buy this and shoot it? It’s more than I want to spend but just questioning it. If anybody is interested in it go ahead and get it.

Thanks
Jeff

Specials in 44S&W Spl

"Other than 44 specials are cool, and
you have to clean a 44 magnum more
when shooting specials out of it, what
reasons would you give for owning a Model 24?"

Resurrection of a Great Topic.

I don't and never have shot 44Spl
in my 44Mags, I just don't.

I just like the 44S&W Special, always have.
I shoot mine a lot, and like to Reload them.

A lot of Shooters just don't pay attention,
over look them (IMHO because of the 44Mag
/44Spl purpose) and that's makes it good for
me.

Some of mine below. S&W 696 3"bbl, Uberti
Bisley, USFA Flat Top, and USFA Bisley (Unfired
Art).

I have read " I never fire 44 spl's " in my 44 mag gun . I wonder how much 38 special ammunition has been fired out of 357 magnum revolvers ? I have often thought I wanted a 44 spl Smith , preferable a 24 in 4" barrel . But at the end of the day I will always find my self reaching for either my Smith 29 , 4" barrel or my Smith 25 ( 45Colt) 4" barrel . So I have decided I don't really need another gun . I just prefer to shoot more the guns that I have . I have shot 44 spl's out of my 29 or I loaded just a nice fairly mild 44 magnum load in my 29 using 700X powder . When I compare 44 spl to 45 Colt , I'm on the " other side " as I choose my Smith 25 in 45 Colt . This post is not about " which is better " ? Just my preference . Regards, Paul

I've had 2 29s over the decades, and as I recall, I never put one round of 44 magnum ammo thru either. Might just as well have had 24s.

Let me chime in with a perspective I have not seen elsewhere here.
I am basically a bullseye shooter. I learned the fundamentals that way and primarily compete that way. Handguns used to be designed and built around the ideals of that discipline.
The 6&1/2" barrel S&W 44 Special has an unmatched balance, handling and accuracy in a one-hand big bore revolver. (OK, the 38/44 Outdoorsman is right up there, too!). Doesn't matter which flavor: 1950 Target, Triple Lock, M24, etc.... All good!
The 4" 44 Special is nice, too, especially for packing. But, on the range or in the field, I love the way the front sight hangs on target, the clean break of that perfect trigger, the warm push of just the right amount of recoil, and.....whack! That big bullet nails it!
Yeah, I Love the M29, too. But, the balance and handling are better with the Special, especially if you are under the pressure of a match.
But why choose? Get both!

Best Regards,
Jim

This question came up at the range this past week. I like 44 specials, so I own one. Many of the other guys there felt it was not necessary to own a Mod. 24 if you already owned a 44 magnum, i.e. 29/629 as you can shoot specials in it.

Other than 44 specials are cool, and you have to clean a 44 magnum more when shooting specials out of it, what reasons would you give for owning a Model 24?

Why own a Model 24?
.44 Special.
End of story.

It's kind of like asking why own a model 14 or 15 when you can get a 19 and shoot Specials and Magnums.
Because (to me) the 14 and 15 look better, and I like .38 revolvers.
Plus, I shoot a LOT more .38 and .44 Special than .357 and .44 Magnum ammo.

It's as though some people think there's something inherently wrong with the Specials that only a Magnum can fix.

For me, I prefer the barrel taper of the 15 and 24 to the 19 and 29.

It would be a shame NOT to shoot it.
S&W made them to be shot a lot.
Safe queens are fine for collectors. I have no problem with them.
But, I like to shoot a lot. And, I like to shoot beautiful guns just as much as guns with finish issues.

I love my 4" 24-3, probably one of the best I have. I see the 44 special like the 28 gauge shotgun. Without going overboard on reloading it, it will do 80% or so of the bigger calibers, with half the recoil, making it twice as fun..

I don’t get the attraction...at least in the 4” length. The 629 mountain gun does all a 4” 24 will do and then some.

Interesting posts and very informative.I understand the balance difference between the 29/629 and the 24/624.I do notice no one has compared the 4.25 M69 and the 24/624.For those that have both, what is your opinion of the balance difference between the two?

I have had several 29's and 629's including the mountain gun. I just download my plinking ammo to 44 special specs and have the option of going with more power if desired. I don't get it either.
