A few of my neighbors have artificial turf. It's a lovely shade of plastic. Drove down the street once and saw a woman vacuuming her yard with a Hoover. Had to do a double take on that one. The rest mostly keep their grass pretty green all summer despite the high cost of watering here.
This summer has been weird, though. Way more rain than usual, and the temps have only reached 100 a couple of times. I measured about 10 inches in my backyard for July. That's usually pretty close to what we get in an entire year.
There's this ONE neighbor whose yard man starts mowing at 5am every Monday morning like clockwork. Yep - mowing in the dark.

We get a massed leaf blower band across the street at 0700 every Thursday.
Love that one! I get one next door whenever the six man lawn crew swoops in and does the whole job - unload, edge, cut, blow, load and depart literally in a cloud of dust - in about 15 minutes. Their choreography and noise is comparable to carrier flight ops. For comparison, it takes me more than an hour just to cut.

I was contemplating buying a riding lawn mower a few years ago, and I noticed that every single one of them came with headlights.

When I was getting a mower a few years ago, the salesman asked if I wanted the “light kit.” I told him, in my neighborhood, the light kit would also need to include the “up-armor kit.”
When I was gainfully employed years ago, I frequently flew in and out of Andrews. I guess due to the constant flow of dignitaries, they'd paint the grass at the terminal green in the winter time. Beyond hideous.
I'd mow mine that early or daybreak if there weren't so much dew on the ground. Typically mid-afternoon of course.
When in Japan, there is a small mountain where I walk sometimes. In the early to mid 20th century, houses there were primarily for second homes of wealthy Tokyo residents, but in recent decades most of the residents are full time. With the exception of winter, it's a pretty rainy, temperate climate, so grass grows like crazy.
One rundown home I walk by on one of my routes has cement fully covering the front yard. Just blankets it.

Hmmm. Noise Ordinance? When I lived in Elyria you were not allowed to mow or use power equipment until 8AM and not past 9PM.

There was a joke in England that the Queen must think that the whole world smells of paint.
I live in N. Florida, deep in the woods. It is hotter than the hinges on the gates of hell up here this time of year. (it has been hovering around 100 with 75% humidity the last week or so) It is also the rainy season so the grass grows in this tropical environment like crazy. I popped out this morning and mowed just the front yard. The rest can wait until Sept. when it starts cooling down. My house can't be seen from the public road, so I can get away with having a fuzzy yard. When I mow everything, it takes about six hours on a 48" cut zero turn and I only do that about four times a year.
Hey, my EGO walk behind has headlights, but I've never even turned them on. It's a lot quieter than gasoline mowers, so I could probably mow in the dark without disturbing the neighbors.
I don't think him lazy as painting his grass will either kill it and/or it will grow back leaving him with work yet to do.
I believe he just might be exercising that pesky "pursuit of happiness" thing.
