Long post - So my 22 year old son who is a few years out of the Marines decided to drive home from North Carolina to NY and bring his fiancé to surprise his mom and me for a Mother's Day visit. He drove overnight after working a 10 hour day too. He also showed me his brand new CCW from NC and his VA card that took 2.5 years to fight for.
He's sitting with us at the dinner table talking about saving up for his first pistol to celebrate the three recent events.
So my wife says,"Dear (uh oh) you have lots handguns (here it comes)…why don't you give him some?"
I was just about to protest when she says,"That would give you more room for some other ones you seem to pick up at the gun shows and local shops."
I hear - give my son who just drove 12 hours after a 10 hour shift some of your guns and go buy replacements"
So we head down to the old safe and pull out the whole collection.
I laid them out said,"Since you are celebrating three life events you can pick any three. I'll box them up this week and have my FFL ship them down to the gun shop we stopped at when I was visiting so everything is nice and legal (plus it frees up some room on my permit for replacements) BUT you agree to never sell them - that's the deal.
We shake on it.
Left to right too to bottom (some older holsters peek in at the top but don't factor in)

19-5 blue with gold lettering that I put 12 rounds through in all the years I owned it - my safe queen
M&P snub blue .38
28-2 that was nickeled at the factory as custom work. I'm sending off the trigger and hammer to be restored to case hardening .357
19-3 blue with some awesome grips .357
66-1 stainless snub with Tyler grips .357
686-4 stainless .357
36 no dash my EDC .38

First choice was the 1911 R1
It was one of the last runs out Ilion NY before Remington moved
"Dad, you picked this up when you and mom signed me up early when I was 17. I remember Grandpa talking about the Marines and they liked that big old 1911 almost as much as the big knifes they carried."
When my son got back from Parris on his first leave his older brother bought him a brand new Kabar so he had his own big knife.
"A Marine needs a 1911 and a Kabar according to Grandpa (Navy vet of Korea who saw some action)

Next one he picks my beloved 6" 686-4
We used that for deer hunting one season and he loved it ever since. "Dad this one is drilled and tapped for a scope mount - this will be perfect down in NC for camping and some hunting on my buddies land. Plus you have that sweet Lou Alessi shoulder holster that…um…seems to have shrunk on you but fits me perfect ( smart Alec kid).
I haven't shot it in a couple years so off to the ship pile

He looks over the two j frames then the two 9mm
He has huge hands and the 36 and 60 are too small for him. VP9 feels good and he likes the Glock but he's not thrilled. He toyed with the M&P snub but he doesn't like the sights.
Then he picks up the 66-1. I have an IWB for it. He tries it on and having a flat stomach and no spare tire hides it no problem.
Here it comes
"I'll take this one!" He holds up the 66-1 snub.
Just like that swindled out of three very nice pistols!
Have to admit - Kid has good taste.
