Windows scam

I would love to put this as my voicemail message but would probably get in trouble:

"You have reached the Deputy Sheriff office of Snohomish County. All officers are currently busy. You can leave a message and an officer will contact you. If this is an emergency please dial 911."

A call center with appropriate software can send any number or caller id info they want, so the area code that shows up can easily be made to look "safe".

Yeah, I know about that. I put the area code in as further info only. They generally put out a number that is not working. I got many calls from "Card Services" till I contacted the Washington state AG who was working an investigation at the time. Suddenly those calls stopped. Golly gee!

When I get those calls or any others like them....

I jest keep repeating, what, what, what....For cryin out loud,

learn to speak the King's English and call me back next year....

.

How timely. Just 10 minutes ago I got a call from 'Mark" in India telling me mine and other Windows computers in my area were contaminated and causing massive shutdowns, problems and overloads on the web. They've changed the script a bit since last time.

I said "How can that be, I'm running Linux on mine and my other computer is a Mac" (they are not). I had him apologizing before he hung up. :D

So this is still going on? I had my call three weeks ago. When he fed me his Windows line, I asked him which of my two computers (we have our regular home PC and I bought my work laptop when I retired) has the problem. Don't remember what he said, but then I asked what is the IP address of the bad computer. He gave me my zip code. Well, you have my correct zip code, but I can't help you if you can't give me the IP address. He finally said I'll have my supervisor call you back.

Posted on this a month or two ago.

Windows tech support.. From the Indian subcontinent..

LISTENED AND ASKED QUESTIONS AND WHEN WE GOT TO THE SOMEWHERE BETWEEN $50 AND $150 BUCKS AND I HAD TO GIVE THEM MY BANK ROUTING AND ACCOUNT #,
I told them I had a University level IT person for support, good bye or as they say goombi. Click.
Sorry about the caps lock but I am too tired to retype.
Good ideas here I will use the porn one given the opportunity. :D:D:D:D

I always tell them I don't have a Windows computer (I have a Linux box. I have a Windows computer too, but it's fun to mess with them). Once I actually had them ask "What kind of computer do you have?" to which I replied "...Why don't you tell me, since you're the one that called to tell me I have an issue!" to which he hung up.:D:D

Surprise, surprise, I got another Windows phone call yesterday. First one was "from" New England somewhere. This one said some town in Illinois.

Hello sir, I'm from Windows, blah, blah. . .
Are you kidding me? Everyone knows you're scamming me.
Oh, no, sir, I'm not scamming you.
Yeah right. click.

I suppose I should have strung her along, not quite understanding, etc, to save someone else a call. After all, I'm now retired and have nothing else to do. . . ;)

I fell victim to the "toner shortage" scam once, 20 years ago, since then I enjoy stringing them along. Once they realize I am punking them, I abuse them until they go away.

Hey, if there are any computer savy guys still watching this thread, what does pressing the "four flags Windows key" and the "r" key at the same time do? I was screwing with them today after I received my 3rd call. He wanted me to press those two keys at the same time. I told him that when I did my screen went blank. Had him going for a while. . . I quit when he told me to restart my computer.

It's just a way to start an application. You press "windows key" + 'R' and you'll get a small dialog where you can type in command line and hit enter to execute program. This way is often used to launch a registry editor or other admin program. Combination by itself is harmless.
