Windows Update

Like it or not, the entire computing world is going cloud based. Storage will be in the ether and programs will be billed on a monthly basis. Updates will be automatic and your programs will always be the newest available.

This is good and bad. The good part is you'll always have new stuff. It will make it easier for the software producers because it ensures all users will have up-to-date software and they won't have to maintain support for old versions.

It's bad because you lose control over your data. It really is Eric Blair's nightmare coming true. It's just 30 years late.

Alas, this is the wave of the future. It's coming. It will get cheaper, but will never be free and we can't stop it.

I am afraid you are right! Soon you will have little control over your PC. Time will come when you will have to contact your service to initiate a re-boot !before you can use it!

Did it this morning. Took just shy of two hours. Going through the security stuff and turning off a whole bunch of things. Seeing what differences there are now. Noticed my chess program didn't make the trip. I'll have to find it.

I'm waiting.

I have precisely ---ZERO--- desire to be an unpaid beta tester for M$.

A friend just upgraded. I'll wait to see what fresh hell he's thrown himself into first.

A not frequently noted fact is that Windows Media Player no longer supports playing DVDs. You'll have to use something else. Supposedly, DVR functionality from Win Media Center is now gone, and requires X-Box-One, something I will NEVER have.

Windows Media Center is gone. It does not exist in Windows 10. Windows 10 will play DVDs, though. It includes a program called, of all things, Windows DVD Player. It works . . . I tried it.

Edited to add: Evidently not every installation of Windows 10 gets Windows DVD Player free. If you have the Pro version of Windows or you had Windows Media Center installed in 7 or 8.1 you get it. If not you have to buy it. If you didn't get it you might as well get vlc player since it's free.

Even on my five year old Toshiba is seems more stable and faster than 7 was. Now if I can just remember how to get out of the tiles and to the preexixting programs without so much hassle.

I've been using it for 9 days, no problems at all. My apps all made it. Runs faster than 8.1. No trouble with I-Tunes either.

I upgraded from 8.1 to 10 on my laptop 3 days ago, no problems so far and I don't have to deal with that stupid "Charms Bar". I'll wait a while before upgrading the desktop (win 7) as I like 7. The laptop came with 8.1 pre-installed with 10 available upon release (the selling point for me). My view, 10 is leaps and bounds better than 8.1 so far.

Upgraded yesterday...Took a little over an hour or three beers by my units of time.Fortunately I kept everything that tells you how to avoid the numerous pitfalls of Win10.

I'm keeping I.E. because I have two homepages I like.I don't like Outlook for email.I also don't like the desktop cluttered with a crapload of useless squares that beg you to click on them.I don't like someone else suggesting what I might be interested in.

Microsoft...Leave me the hell alone! If there is something I need or want I know how to find it.

Well, I was able to upgrade my desktop today. It took just over 2 hours.

I haven't had time to explore everything, but there are two new features that are really nice. The Taskbar is now displayed on both monitors of a dual monitor system. Now I don't have to move my mouse all the way across to the other screen just to open a new program. Nice.

Also, the system now supports multiple desktops. I'm not sure how this will play out yet, but it certainly opens up new avenues of flexibility. I like it.

Hmmm, I don't know what Media Center is, but I still have Media Player on my machine. I haven't tried a DVD yet, but it still plays all my music which is all I ever use it for anyway.

One more thing, while it took longer than I thought it should, this install was easy. In fact, it's the easiest upgrade to an operating system I've ever seen. My desktop is exactly as it was before the upgrade. All my files are in tact and I haven't had a single hiccup. Maybe, just maybe, Microsoft has done something right.

Upgraded one machine. Took 14 hours and immediately my 1985 586-1 broke the firing pin bushing! I don't believe this was coincidence.
